Buttons on climate control issues

I just bought a 2002 Mini. On the climate control unit, the A/C up button doesn't work. The unit currently in there looks like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2006-Mini-Co...-/201349625147

Since I was planning on replacing the whole unit, I was wondering if this one is compatible and if I could buy & install it in place of the previous unit:

No.
You have auto climate control. The ebay unit shown is for manual climate control.
It's very likely that the AC system is malfunctioning. Either the compressor is bad, or the AC clutch, or the system is low on refrigerant, etc.

There are threads on how to test the AC system if you do a search.

Because of the location of the cupholder, the buttons get sloshed and splashed with drinks...
You can try to clean it....
On mine....I used a q-tip...a few Drops of water, and dome contact cleaner...the plastic safevtype...work a bit behind the buttons....wiggle them...might start to work.
The sugar, etc in tldrinks seem to cause issues with the buttons sticking AND grounding out the contacts.....
And does the light on the ac button come on? Might be a bad compressor etc...

The light comes on, I don't *think* the ac is malfunctioning because it works on low. It definitely blows cold, I just can't make it stronger because it seems like the buttons broken. It doesn't click or press or anything. Which is why I was considering sidering replacing the whole climate control unit so the button would work. All of the buttons work except the up button, it's just caved in

If cleaning it doesn't work, you need the same type you have...so another automatic one.

By the 'up button', you mean the fan speed (top right?)

I've got an auto a/c unit I bought years ago - let me know if you want it and will give you a good deal.

FWIW, that auto AC module is easy to open up and inspect/clean. Like ZippyNH said, if you have the dash mount cupholder, chances are the module is doused with whatever drinks are used. I took mine apart down to the button to clean (some of the buttons were sticking). Your issue very well may be gunk of the button pad of that AC button not allowing a connection to the circuit board. Also, there is a small fan that pushes air past the temp sensor. That cavity gets filled with dirt and dust which could affect the auto temp.

You can open its up and clean it , Cotton swabs and windex works good. People spill things on them from the newer design cup holder to the right. Or from just having drinks near it. If it shorted then it will need replaced, most of the time its just sticky and needs cleaned.

You have a early design with the rotary center ****. Also there are some split years for the models. What production month/ year are you ?

a VIN lookup says the production month was april 2002. I am going to try to open it up and see, although it feels just broken and not sticky. I'll post an update!
