Over heating.troubleshoot suggestion?

Hey guys!
So my r53 is over heating.
Long story short.
Rush hr, stuck in traffic, gauge shoots up, pulled over, expansion tank fluid very low. Poured in some distall water and no problem (drove an hr home).
Over the weekend, had my car running still and expansion tank is leaking.
Checked oil dip stick, no milky/creamy resin.
What should i trouble shoot from here? I took the front end and will flush the radiator. Could it just be the expansion tank?

A leaking expansion tank can cause the whole problem. If it is leaking, replace it at once. Motor on.
