Register a new battery - how?

Hello!

I need to install a new battery on my R56 Mini one -11 diesel

I have searched online and found out that if your mini has a IBS (Intelligent Battery System) you must register the new battery installed.

Do you guys know or have any instructions on how to "register the new battery"?

I understand you need to do it over the OBD2 port, but what software do i need and how do you do it?
(Someone know where to download the software?)

Thank you very much for information.
Grettings.

This is what the MINI technical info says:
Not all MINIs are fitted with the intelligent battery system.
A car equipped with it can be identified by the electronics integrated in the terminal end of the negative battery cable.

When replacing the battery a car equipped with this system will have to have the new battery registered using the MINI scan tool.

Registering the battery reinitialises power management and clears charging system voltage adaptations to ensure the electrical systems continue to operate correctly.

You can get problems if you have that IBS thing.

Registering the battery is not anything that can be done at home, generally. You need the specific software that the dealers have; there is an option in it for registering a new battery. A good independent shop might have the software as well, but I think it would be quite rare for a DIY'er to have access to it.

It is unclear to me, at least, what registering does. It may be that you will get less battery life out of one that is not registered, or there may be other problems of some kind. It's hard to tell with all of the complexity built into our cars.

Technically, I think you can buy the software, but it's vey expensive for a customer unless you do a lot of Minis yourself. The closest software we would have to possibly do it would be the Auto Enginuity, but I, myself, have not used it so I'm not 100% sure. Your best bet would be to go to a shop that has the software or something similar to it. I'd call a shop near you and see what they may have to offer, and a price. It will be the cheaper option.

You can do it with autologic software or autoenginuity if you know someone who has these or can find a workshop that has them. I have personally done it with autoenginuity.

Bavarian technic cannot do it.

Obviously the dealer can do it.

I don't think anything bad will happen if you don't. My daughter had a flat battery, and she called the official BMW roadside assistance. Her battery was not salvagable, and they put a new one in, but they did not register it. That is the official BMW car that comes out.

I don't have an IBS on my car, but I got a new battery from my MINI dealer. Same size and CCA's. I don't have any issues, cost about $190 from the dealer and I installed it myself.

Some vehicles have the IBS and some don't ! so saying you put a battery in and it was fine...may just mean you don't have the IBS to begin with! The op is asking if With the IBS and the battery is replaced without registering, will they have an issue? I would think something could be amiss if you do nothing, or else it would not have the contraption to begin with. There are other posts on this issue and some have said it monitors and relays information to critical parts of the vehicle.

So....

My car flashed the battery light on the way to work which went away when my car was coasting on neutral... until I got inches away from work when my car stalled out and refused to start again.

I tried to jump the car just to get the car into my work building but while it would start, the car stalled out seconds later.

I got a new battery installed (sadly breaking the battery panel on the cowl) and while I had a CEL light for a bit (it went away after several drives), the red battery light is STILL on. My car is running fine and I've stopped and started engine several times. I think I have the IBS as I see a box floating in space next to my negative cable.

Could registering my battery clear this red light? Nobody here has mentioned a red battery light warning on changing a battery. My mini dealership is swamped with repairs and so I can't see them for a week (and I'm resigned to paying them to do this registration), but I don't want to be stranded in this texas heat without a functioning car if my battery actually isn't charging... but I do need a car until then.

From what I've read here, there's a box connected to the negative battery lead. I'm guessing/hoping given that I have a brand new battery that this is the problem (vs something more serious like alternator) and that this box is the IBS (the negative comes out of it, and it sits like 2 inches to the right (facing from front).

Here is a thread on NAM that may help. If you didn't, and you have the IB system, register it and see if the light goes away. Our battery replacement DIY goes over this process here.

I had read those threads but not much about red battery lights after change or even pics of what the IBS looks like.

I'd hate to spend $100 on registration and find out that my alternator has issues (possibly stemming from other work done recently) and that my car actually didnt need registration at all.

The battery light could indicate some alternator issues, but I'd hate for you to replace it without confirming it is in deed an issue. Be sure to test it. Here is a thread about the battery and has lots of information about it and the IBS. Post #37 linked shows you where to look to see if your MINI has it. You should, if you haven't and yours requires it, register it because if the battery is not registered, the charge program will be incorrect, shortening battery life.

I don't think your charging system isn't charging your battery properly or at all and I doubt if it's the IBS, whenever you get a red warning light it requires your immediate attention! I have never heard of anyone getting a red warning light for not registering their batteries, it only ensures the batteries life is shortened. You have a bigger problem than just not registering your battery!

Well, if you're DIY inclined you could probably do it yourself. Alternators here and we have a DIY here that goes over the R56 towards the bottom (Figure 10 as well). Otherwise, I would search for an Indy MINI specialist in your area in Austin as they will most certainly charge less than the dealer.

Why in the world do people feel the need to go to the dealer, that's the most expensive place to buy parts for your car.

Here are two alternators for far less than half the price for my Mini here, one by a reputable manufacture and a genuine Mini part.

that price included labor which was not insignificant. indy shops only were saving about the cost to tow my car over forget about rental / public transit.

Dealers still have insane labor rates as well as part prices, I doubt it take long to replace an alternator. I would do it myself over the weekend ($581 vs $1400) and save some serious cash.

If anyone in NYC/Northern NJ area wants me to change their battery type and/or register their new battery, PM me. I can do it for 20 bucks. I live near Giants Stadium. I bought the Carly for BMW app yesterday and registered my new battery. Everything seems to work great so far. For anyone that wants to get their own, The app and adapter cost me about $135 total. I would like to recoup what I paid. Depending if you need fault codes reset, It takes about 15-20 mins to do everything. My battery died so a bunch of fault codes showed up as Low Voltage. I had 21 fault codes due to the old battery dying and I reset everything. If there's 10 guys that want to meet up, I can do it for 10 bucks. I'm not trying to make a profit, just get back what I paid.
