Rubbing Noise in Front End
Rubbing Noise in Front End
Noticed the sound ("whump whump") of someting rubbing in the front end of my MC that seems to based on the speed of car or I guess you coud say the rotation of the tires.
After 20mph you can't hear it but I doudt that means it has gone away.
My passenger says it sounds like it is coming from right front but I say left front.
Checked tire pressure.
Felt all around but didn't find anything.
Anu opinions?

I've got it too.
Yep, my car has been making this noise also. I feel it mostly at low speed like when parking.
My prevoius SA noticed it. He stated he didn't know what it was, "but keep a eye on it"
Recently had my car back in with my new SA. (To resolve another issue not resolved by my previous SA)I had given them soo much too look at during my last visit, I think they just figured I was nuts, and gave up.
1.So this time I wanted them to just focus on fixing the Sunroof they created a wind noise in during my last visit. (Hilarious, since I never asked them to look at the sunroof, thanks for the wind noise guys !!
)
2.The original problem. See the tapping thread.
3. As well as replace my wipers.
4. Load v38.1
They were 3 for 4, the wind noise is still there, but they are upto a .750 batting average.
Anyway, while I was waiting to see about the v38, a customer described this problem, "rubbing noise at low speeds, like when parking". She (my SA) picked up the phone and had a tech make room to put this car on the hoist imediately. So she seemed pretty concerned and was aparently trying to ensure that parts were ordered right away. It would appear she had heard this description before, and had a pretty good idead what it was.
I was going to wait a few weeks and search the site for info or start a new thread, looks like you may have already done that. I was so happy to get the tapping noise fix and get my car back, I was going to wait at least few weeks to return to the dealer.
I don't know what is causing this. I had the dealer look at my steering column, and they were "unable to duplicate" any issue with the column. So it would apear this is not the earlier issue with steering columns..
The dealer suspected the rubbing had to do with my wheels, but they stated they put it on the hoist, and couldn't blame the wheels. After that, I think they gave up, and asked me to keep a eye on it.
Very interested if anyone knows what is causing the rubbing issue. It kinda feels like a wheel bearing gets loaded up while turning, like it is out of grease maybe? then the rubbing goes away when you straighten out. Anyone else notice this feeling/sound ?
Minibill, does this sound like your problem, or something different ? My noise is not repeating in a steady rhythym like something in the tire. It's of a lower tone, not a clicking sound, more like a rubbing noise, a whump if you will.

My suspension is stock still. Leaving work yesterday it almost felt like it was bound up, until I straightened out. I have to find time to test it more closely.
Hey Kenchan,
Nice website, very cool.
Don't fear the pulley, your Pillow intake and Unichip have likely already voided your warranty anyways !!!!
So just do it !!!

Thanks! Its my getto-style site, but i guess it serves its purpose.
The part that I don't like about the idea of the pulley is not warranty
coverage...its not being able to revert to stock on the fly. And I'm not
sure if I can install it on my own. I'd hate to count on shops
just to revert back to stock....plus my car's pretty darn fast already. hehe

Hi all! I have a 2003 MCS/JCW and have noticed the sound also upon further inspection with the help of a friend we found that the front coil springs "bind" slightly and make the "wump" sound when they unbind. I have a spot in my drive that is uphill and off camber that I turn sharp into to park the lil guy out of the way of the other cars and in this spot I could recreate the sound over and over.
