Cruise control issue

Hello all. I am intermittently getting this warning light in my 2008 Cooper. When it does the cruise control will not engage. It comes and goes. I have found very little info on it. Anyone have any info or common issues to share?

Thank you in advance,

Ivan

Looked it up in the manual, icon is 'Cruise Control Failed'. Looks like a trip to the dealer..

Surely it is related to troubles with your clockspring. Go to the official service for a full check. If the problem is the clockspring you can replace it with another one (used if you want).

Let us know

The battery is less than 8 months old. The clockspring totally sounds like the issue. I know basically how this system operates and the components are very few. With 125000 miles that clockspring could very well be the issue. I have the ability to replace it myself. I had a large repair facility for 10 years. My main problem with identifying this is that the code disappears and the problem clears up. This will happen within a single drive. I am going to replace it. It sounds spot on to me. Thank you miniuy and the rest of you in this Forum. This is a great place, and I will post the results.

Ivan,

However it is not a bad idea that you go to the official service in order to confirm that it is a problem with the clockspring.

Let us know if you have any doubt with the clockspring replace.
Sorry for the comment, but please, do it with the battery disconnected, since you will be touching the driver airbag (again sorry for the comment, I can´t no say it).

I never had problems with my clockspring, but since my MC 2010 had no factory MF on the steering wheel, I had to upgrade it to MFSW and it involves to replace the clockspring with another one that supports MF (previously I checked the compatible part numbers).

Official Dealer Diagnotic: $ 50
Official Dealer new Clockspring: $ 1600
Used MCS 2011 Clockspring (ebay): $ 200

You may need to set the zero point (center the steering wheel of the car with the new clockspring) and if you want you can set your car VIN to the new clockspring through Tool32.

Good luck with the job!

Thank you for the thoughts. I do have the ability to reset the steering angle. I am going to monitor and try to manipulate the fault. If I can create a predictable repeatable issue, confirmation should be easy. There can be days or weeks between issues. Now that I have some direction I will try to focus on the clock spring because it truly makes sense. I will post any updates, progress, or successes.

Thank you again!

Sorry to revive an old thread... but I have a 2013 Mini Cooper Countryman all 4S and I've started getting the same error sporadically. When the icon appears- the cruise control is non responsive. It can be turned on, but cannot be set. It will also blink a. Purple of times and turn off.

My my battery is about 6 years, but not showing any signs of wear or degradation.

Was as the issue the clock spring as mentioned earlier, or could a speed sensor also be the culprit? Thanks for your input.

I replaced the clockspring a couple months ago. The frequency of the error dropped by 95%. It is a timeout code meaning it must be a communication problem. I believe it is a terminal tension issue on the data lines since most of the time now the problem happens when it is very cold or a sharp motion like a pothole or abrupt stop. I replaced the clock spring when the issue happened every day for a week. After replacing it the problem did not occur for about 5 weeks. One day I will spend time trying to narrow it down, but for now, I am going to live with it.

I am going to see if I can buy a used connector for the clock spring connector and swap 2 replacement terminals into it in place of the existing data lines terminals. I'll report back on the results.

Sorry to also revive an old thread, did you get anywhere with this as I'm having a similar issue with the intermittent warning light but since it's been colder the issue has become much more consistent and like you said there's a lack of info that I could find out there about this issue? Thanks!

Hello,

Short answer is no. My original post was in 2010 and now we are in 2023 and it is so intermittent with no pattern, I just live with it until it becomes more practical. I know it is a information buss issue. It is a timeout between when one module pings another. Next time I get into the dashboard, I am going to visit some of the electrical connectors on the modules in question for that information data relationship, and see if there are any smoking guns to be focused on.

Hello all,

I have new thoughts to this issue, so I am trying something. If I win the battle, I will post the fix.

afaik, dirty throttle body might cause this issue. remove it and thoroughly clean it.

Hello all, I may have found the problem. Time will tell. I replaced the cruise control switch on the steering wheel. No issues since its replacement. I bought a used one, then switched the electrical part into my bezel so the cosmetics do not matter. The switch cost me $20 from ebay. Fingers crossed.

I'm at 281,000 miles and this has been as unpredictable as can be. it is not cold, nor hot, nor bumps, nor short or long trips. My co-worker retired from Mini and feels it's a Kombi module issue. I am in no way, going to try that. I have learned to live with it. I can go a full year without an issue, or start it up cold and have it happen as I pull the car out of the garage, and have it 3 times in a week. I think it is a timeout of the pings trying to talk to it. My friend feels pretty confident that its a Kombi module.
