Hey all, first post here! I just installed the radio + speedo unit (with a new mainboard), and the radio came back alive! However, the display under the tachometer is now dimmed and I lost the speedometer and the fuel indicator. Oh, and the blinker sound is gone too. Does anyone have similar problems before? Any recommendations are appreciated!
only radio works
engine is on, tachometer works (showing RPMs), but the display is dimmed and grayish
It indeed is a cable to the speedometer that I forgot to connect. It took me an hour to get the radio out, plug it, and then install everything again. Thanks for your help!
After I swapped in the replacement low tone horn and the new windshield washer pump, the central instrument cluster came back to life. Explain that to me...and the click-click-click of the turn signals is also working now.
I did try and get error codes from the cluster using AutoEnginuity with BMW module but I could get no access when the cluster was dead (makes sense). Im gonna try it tonight now that the cluster is working.
I have a similar issue. None of the lights in the tach work. All of the lights in the speedometer work. The needle in the tach works. ??? I'm guessing maybe something in the speedometer that sends the tach info???

Dont know but that one is easy to change. Check fuses, check connection to the unit and then if all looks good just buy a used one.
AllData is making finding this connector a nightmare...I cant find it.
I just read your first post. I may have changed this same system when my speedo/gas gauge failed. I bought a used unit. Maybe yours was faulty or their is a bad connection? I remember it was a delicate procedure.
Again, thank you your help! Is that the connector for the tach? From what I've read, it seams like the tach data comes through the speedo. Are you saying that maybe I have either a bad connection from the speedo or a fault from the speedo? I haven't pulled that out yet, as it is not as easy as the tach.
Instrument dials The instrument cluster consists of two components. The actual instrument panel is in the centre of the dashboard. The auxiliary instrument is on the steering column.
NOTICE: Auxiliary instrument connected to the K-CAN
The auxiliary instrument (KOMBI2) is connected to the K-CAN. The instrument cluster (KOMBI) is connected to the auxiliary instrument via the body bus.
System test
The system test permits simple, visual assessment of the functions in the instrument cluster:
- Pointer instruments
- Displays
- Backlighting of all displays
- Warning and indicator lamps
Selecting system test function:
The system test can be started at terminal R (radio position), terminal 15 "ON" (ignition "ON"),vehicle and engine stopped. The system test can be started in different ways:
- by means of "Component activation" with a diagnosis telegram
- by calling up the test function 02 (system test).
The system test is started via the test function 02. This test function is not locked. The test functions are started by pressing the trip recorder reset button in the instrument cluster. Keep the button pressed for longer than 15 seconds.
The display now contains: 01._ _
Briefly pressing the button switches to the system test.
The display now contains: 02._ _
Briefly pressing again starts the system test.
The elements activated are:
- All pointer instruments
- All LC displays with a segment test and their background lighting
- All indicator and warning lamps
- Variable indicator lamp (check control symbols)
- Gearbox program / gear display
- Turn signal indicators
I have to leave town so no more diagnosing until Wednesday. I will check all that out. Thank you so much again for the info! I believe it is an 18 pin. Here is a picture of the tach connection.

Ya that's her. Obviously #1 Make sure you're getting 12 volts.
I wish I could find the voltages for the pins for you my friend. All data is so circuitous and i don't have enough experience working on electrical and using all data for that.
Maybe the Bentley manual would be easier to search directly. Do you have access to one?
No worries. Thanks. I don’t have access to any manuals. I checked voltages on pins a while ago. I know I had 12v on at least one. Some had none and some had either 3 or 4 volts. I think I’ll eventually pull the speedo and try to trace it from there.
I think that because I copied and pasted the image rather than uploading it, it didn't work the first time. Also, I looked through my Bentley manual and couldn't find anything of value.
That's excellent! Thank you. I'll check it when I get back in town. I imagine there may be a bad connection in the can bus or somehow not getting all info from can bus.
yes they did mention a failed controller as possible cause in ALLDATA. This is coincident with your doing some work on the speedo so...maybe you fried the control unit?
