Rear View Mirror Loose

My rear view mirror keeps slowly tilting down, requiring constant adjustment. Is there a way to get the tension back so that it stays where I put it?
There appears to be a ball and socket joint where it is rotating.
Anyone solve this problem?
Thanks

They clip into that socket. Might be able to hold it by forcing some teflon tape in there wrap i around the ball.

Otherwise you can take it off an all apart to see if something broke.

Do you mean that I can pull on both sides of the mirror and it will disengage from the ball and socket?

Its a ball and socket and tight, also it has the wired that you dont want to pull on the feed into the housing. Best is to unbolt it and dissect the housing or try to wedge some tape in there.

Rear-view mirror inside.

i got the same problem

with my R52 2008.. it kept tilting downwards for a while and tonight out of the blue i tried to just take the mirror off by force, i found out the socket has gone rubbish with a few TEETH come out and that is a metal ring but cannot fit there anymore maybe due to the broken teeth in the socket...

in addition, what is that mysterious electronic circuit inside the mirror? i dont have auto dim or anything like that with my car... i searched online it is something to do with the key security immobilized system where i cannot just buy another used mirror from ebay as the immobilized system need reprogramme?

so confused.

The picture up above provided by ECS Tuning shows that there's an opening around the ball at the back of the mirror. I looked around my house and found some spongy packing foam and then I used an Exacto knife to cut a small piece. I wedged the foam into the bottom side of the cavity underneath the ball.
So far this seems to be working. The foam pushes up on the mirror so it's less likely to rotate down. Also the push from the foam makes the ball a little bit tighter.

Mirror replacement

I had the same loose mirror issue in my R52 where it kept dipping pointing downward. I ended up buying a mirror from a 2010 BMW 328I at the junkyard for $23…I pulled the key fob transmitter module from the old mirror and put it in the new mirror, hooked up 2 wires into the molex connector and I now have auto dimming, homelink and a compass. The shape of the mirror is different but I’m ok with that.

There is a little ring that snaps over the receiver for the ball. This keeps it snug. If you hear a mild rattle when you drive it is that ring that has come off and is just loose around the shaft. It is a ***** to get on again but it can be done. I just don't think I have it TOTALLY on as every few weeks it comes off again. Love to know the best way to do it right.

I sand it to make it rough got little better but still pretty loose. Then I put some sticky wax and now it's snug.
