02 MCS overheating and fuse F5 ???
02 MCS overheating and fuse F5 ???
OK gearheads.....
Well, my first real problem after 29000 miles. My wife stopped to talk to a neighbor for a few minutes with the car idling (AC off - nice day in the NW). It then preceded to overheat. gauge pegged red.
Luckily, she was close to the house. I put in almost 2 quarts of water in it after it cooled. Started it and drove around the block a couple of times. Needle normal, no issues. Stopped to talk to a neighbor discribing the issue and watching the gauge. After about 3-4 minutes, temps start climbing QUICKLY! Car is now cooling in the garage.
Couple of weird things, the electric engine fan never ran
! Hmmm. The main fuse that has the fan symbol on it is fine. Hmmm. However, a small 5A fuse labeled F5 was blown!
I have replaced that but have not done another road test.
Of course, all this happens 15 min after the local delaer service team has left for the weekend. Grrr, closing at 4:30!!! Will have to wait until monday AM to discuss with them.
In the frightful mean time and me with little patience, anybody got a clue?
My thoughts right now - water pump is working thankfully otherwise it would boil immediately. The electric fan seems to have an issue. But what is fuse F5? Surely a 5A fuse does not control the electric fan.
Thanks,
GMG

Hey thanks.
I failed to mention that the F5 5A fuse was the one in the engine compartment.
Looks like from that thread that it controls the electric fan relay. OK. Getting somewhere. But why would it blow?

Get the Power Steering Fan changed
I had the same symptoms. Took it straight to Morristown Mini and they immediately changed the power steering fan to an upgraded one with a cute little cover. They flushed the system and added coolant and I was on my way. It hasn't happened since.
Could be the cause. I just 'freed' my power steering fan because it was stuck. I even have a guard on it. Felt like a small rock was impeding movement.
I hope they do the same thing as Rich's.

Problem solved. Siezed power steering fan caused the issue. Fan replaced, new wiring harness installed and fuse replaced. No flush of coolant.
Keep an eye on that F5 fuse guys.
BTW - I had a guard on my fan. I think a tiny pebble got in there and jammed it. Kind of like Finding Nemo.
