Where to purchase new PS Pump?

So I have an interesting failure- my Power Steering Pump is actually grounding out the OBD connector so that I can't flash my computer, check codes, or get my emissions testing done. As soon as I unplug the pump, I can talk to the PCM just fine!!!

So, where is the best place to buy a replacement pump at this time? What prices are you seeing?

We keep them in stock
New OEM

or we now have an aftermarket one. It's a little more cost effective, but has a higher core cost and 1 year warranty

What year are you, I would also see if it would fall under the PS pump : I don't know if they would classify that as a PS failure, might want to call your dealership.

Also would be a great time to have a look at the P/S lines while you are there.

For certain years there is a recall from MINI on the pump and fan if it fails : https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...50k-miles.html

For the power steering pump , its electrical pump and see here :

Here is the power steering lines parts and DIY:

Thanks and good luck.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, I already ordered a pump (will be here today). I did check into the recall/warranty extension, and unfortunately my R53 has 188K miles, so I'm out on that... At least it doesn't look like a hard job...

Just be sure to pick up the RIGHT PS Fluid...
The system does not use convenental fluid, but a syenthic, and is not compatible...
Chf-11 I think...a quick serch will confirm it...
Mini dealers have it, vendors, most VW dealers, and SOME auto parts stores...ask..it might be a counter item.

For anyone else needing a pump I picked mine up at NAPA last year. It's a Dorman remanufactured and has a NAPA no questions asked lifetime warranty. The pump is quiet unlike the original

I sent mine to Module Masters and had them rebuild it for $225 with a 5 year warranty. So far I have about 6 months on it without trouble. Its been very quiet. Supposedly better than stock.

Get the CHF-11S fluid on Amazon for $14-$17 liter depending on brand.

Found out mine was covered under the extended factory warranty for excessive pump failures after a replaced it. Unfortunately I did not buy the replacement from the Mini dealer (even though it was the exact same brand as the original) so thaey would not reimburse me.

Love the Mini... not so much our local dealer.

(They are within 20 minutes of the house but I would rather order out of Memphis then buy from them). :(

There is an "extended warranty" of sorts thru your dealer. 02-some 05's up to 150k miles. It includes when needed the harness you are having issues with. Last I knew, the harnesses are ordered by VIN for each case to prevent dealers from over stocking them.

GL!

Hey Dan,

How did you diagnose that it was your PS pump?

My 02 R53 had a complete electrical shutdown 25 feet from home (got lucky there). The steering had felt odd for the last few days - like it did not want to center itself but the effort was normal.

I disconnected the battery, charged it up, and pulled the 100 amp PS fuse, got the car started and got the car home. I checked the battery voltages and it looks like it and the alternator are working. Given the repair cost for the pump I am looking to positively diagnose it as the culprit.
Cheers,
-Fizz
