Found small cone shaped plastic under the engine

I found 100s if not 1000s of 1/4 inch cone shaped black semi hard plastic pieces under my 03 MCS. Anyone have any ideas? I'm waiting to hear back from the dealership, but I thought I would ask here too. Thanks for your help

How long before or after starting the car did you find these things? And assuming you did start the car shortly before finding the cones, did the car sound normal?

Totally weird...

They kinda look like the nubbies from new tires to me but they wouldn't fall off by themselves.

I thought that too, but they are in my oil drip pan that sits under the engine. The tires have close to 30,000 miles.

They look like the nipples on the under side of car mats. At least to me. Had a set do that once. The mats wouldn't sit still after that.

Is there more to this story?

OK, let me get this straight...

1) Your car is running and sounding fine.
2) There are no black plastic cones in your garage's oil drip pan
3) You park your car (over the oil drip pan) and turn it off.
4) Next day/morning, you start your car and back out of the garage
5) You notice "100s or 1000s" of black plastic cones in your oil drip pan and on the garage floor
6) The car continues to run and sound fine.

How would these things get UNDER your car (and in the oil drip pan) if they didn't somehow fall out of the engine area and down to the garage floor?

Did I get this right, or is there something here I'm missing?

Yes this is all correct. I really have no idea of what they are.

Did someone say "nipples"?

Bizzare Perhaps they were picked up on the road from a vehicle ahead of you dropping plastic "nipples". Have you seen them since?

They look like they were "punched" out nipplets from some type of plastic manufacturing process.

Well, I'm really eager to hear what the dealer says...

My first guess was that your catalytic converter and/or part of your exhaust suffered some sort of catastrophic failure and the "cones" came out of an under-car rupture in one of the pipes (or converter). But since you say all is sounding and running fine, there wouldn't seem to be a problem with the exhaust.

One more thing...is your HVAC (heating, vent, air conditioning) working and sounding proper? Perhaps something was ingested and expelled from that system. Although, things from the HVAC falling below the car seems pretty unlikely.

Barring all of that, my last guess is that you ran over something and the debris simply didn't fall down until you'd been parked for a while.

(obviously, I love a mystery... :smile

Hilarious thread! Glad you figured it out! I'd be surprised to see something bizarre like that appear under my MINI too!

I think the man is lying through his teeth...the "dad" story is just a cover. I figure the black rubber deals are black rubber deals that contain alien seeds.
In fact I just read about black rubber thingy's out to conquer the world in www.youreeffingcrazy.com . We need to call ole Tom Ridge......
