speedometer is wrong

My mini came with 15" wheels from the factory. I bought it with no wheels so I put 17" factory mini wheels and I believe my speedometer is off. Is there a way to re calibrate it?

They are all off from the factory on purpose. The diameter of your wheel does not affect it but the diameter of your tires can. Dealers won't/can't correct it and I haven't seen anyone offering a reprogramming service to do so either.

The factory MINI wheels come with tires that are very close in diameter (even when the wheel size is different).

It is normal for the speedometer to read high in all BMW and MINI vehicles. Actually it is intentional by the manufacturer. There are a zillion threads by owners complaining about this. I believe that it can be adjusted in NCS Expert programming.

The odometer is accurate and unaffected by the high speedometer reading.

If you can read the speedo from a scangauge or some little Bluetooth thing it will be more accurate. The gauges read differently. That's why the odometer can still be correct

What size tires did you get? Are they an OEM size?
Getting an "alternative" size can save a few $$, and reduce gap, but can sometimes make the 2-3 stock speedo error worse....

I had an old Ford truck I put 33 inch tires on. Speedo never worked right after that. I just drove around at what I thought was OK. I passed a co-worker on the way to work one morning and he said I flew by him and he was going 80mph. I must have been doing 90+. If you can't get it rectified, be careful you don't drive too fast.

In my Mini sometimes I look down and I'm surprised I'm driving so fast. After 5 year of riding nothing but a motorcycle I have a hard time gauging my speed without the wind blowing on me.

Actually the opposite. Reducing gap (with larger tire diameter) would reduce the high speedo reading and make it more accurate.

He didn't specify larger diameter, just "an 'alternative' size."

However he also said 'reduce gap.' Which if interpreted as reducing fender-tire gap would mean a larger than stock diameter which in turn, would reduce the higher than actual speedometer reading.

He provides three possible consequences of getting a size different from OEM. He doesn't specify size in absolute nor relative diameter. Nor does he say which of the possible consequences will actually occur:

You can save money, and [you can] reduce gap, but you can sometimes increase speedometer error.

It is not the best writing but with spoken inflection and pauses at each comma it would be clear.

if you have a smart phone, get a speedo app and see how far off you ar, make a note of it. on android I use "Ulysse Speedometer" seems pretty close to what those highway speed signs say, +/-1 mph. i went from 15s to 16s on my 08 cooper and that brought me to 2-3 off from 5-6 off. So i think you may be pretty close to right on.

I do have a app on my Iphone. According to the app the speedo is about 4-5mph faster then it. So thats good based on the way I drive to work.
