Anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot an intermittent third brake light?

I'm sorry but I don't know what model and year Mini you have...? Are you the original owner? If not the the previous owner probably installed one of these.

You want to put your cars info in your signature, reference my signature at bottom of post. So your third brake light works only sometimes? My suspicion is possibly the foot-well module or perhaps a bad switch/wires, have you been in any accidents in the rear area?

Thanks for the tips. It's never been in an accident but you've given me a few places to look!

I'd bet the unit is bad....maybe a dry solder joint...
Remove and replace.

Check the seal and the connection. If its all three brake lights I would point towards the brake micro-switch sensor on the pedal. With just the top brake light , might be the connection.

There is a red version and a clear version.

Clear version ( that lights red )

Thanks
