Rad Fan staying on after driving

Hey everyone,

Have another issue with my car (woo for 3 in the last month). I got home from driving it (2007 Cooper S, 6 Speed) for around 10 minutes yesterday in -20 Celcius weather. When i turned the car off I noticed the fan staying on which is something that rarely ever happens here in the heart of Alberta (even rare in the summer). From what I have found on the site this is usually caused by the Coolant Temp Sensor.

Is this what most people have found with this problem? My coolant level is between max and min, and I never had it completely drained so I don't think its a bubble/air issue. The heat and everything inside the car still works fine.

I have to order the steering wheel wiper arm stalk assembly anyway this week to fix the clock spring (airbag) issue I am having, so if I can just order a Coolant Temp Sensor at the same time that would be good.

Any ideas or experience on this would be great. Thanks in advance.

Why yours would suddenly start...? It's definitely triggered by that sensor, of course. Mine/several 2012's were shipped with an "iffy" one, MINI replaced mine as part of a "campaign" when it was in for its 15k service. To me, it had caused no issues, but I did notice that the radiator cooling fan would only run briefly after stopping, or sometimes not at all, versus several minutes like before.

We've had a VERY cold winter here in midwest USA this year, and it always surprises me when it's choosing to run for a bit after shutoff on a very cold day. But it does, sometimes.

Just another data point...you asked what others had experienced.

Thanks ljmattox,

I will definitely be keeping an eye on it. But if it continues to run for 10 minutes every time I turn the car off I am guessing eventually it will kill the battery.

Anyone else experience this?

10 mins ? Mine in Texas only runs for 1 minute max . Something seems wrong.

I live in Maryland and it usually runs for 1-2 minutes max.

It should not run that long. Something is wrong. It could be the thermostat. It could be something else. Just what, I do not know. You should find out for sure what the problem is, before you go changing anything. A little research should help.

Well from what I could find for same symptoms as me was the Coolant Temperature Sensor. That's why I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced it or something like it. Didn't really want to spend another couple hundred dollars on diagnostic just for this part if at all possible.

I understand. I just do not have the answer for you. I have not yet had the problem you describe.

So, drove the car today, it was about -26 Celsius this morning. I noticed some issues with reduced throttle response and lag on the acceleration when I initially was driving it. After about 10 minutes that seemed to go away. After my 30 minute drive to work. I parked, turned off the car and lo and behold no fan going. Really weird, definitely will have to keep a close eye on this.
