Help Needed R53 Rear latch not closing

Hey all.

So, i'm sure most of you know the cold temps have been around this area. last night i opened up my hatch when it was about 0 degrees, maybe less out. light comes on, then i go to shut it and i saw that the light on the dash for the hatch was still on. opened the hatch and closed it again, same thing. i was finally able to get it to turn off after some pushing on it. so i got an oil change today, and i guess they opened up the hatch, and the light was on. i took the rear decor panel off and unplugged the latch mechanism and plugged it back in but the light on the dash is driving me crazy.

any help? new latch mechanism or what? latch release button? please help!

unfortunately you may have to wait until it warms up. sometes the mechanism inside freezes up.

if you can, just fiddle around with it with a screw driver, attempting to close it to see if it works.

if you have access to a heat gun or even a hair dryer, try heating it up a bit.

if its not the cold temp causing your problem, its beyond me. im no door latch expert.

if nobody here can help, i would also suggest a simple google search, as i would imagine every make of vehicle can have this issue.

Sounds like its the latch, you can try to soak it with spray lubricant and see if that works. Hopefully the internal are not broken. Yours wont lock which is the opposite of then unlock problem people have, but this gives the idea.

Also make sure the hook catch (trunk striker latch ) in lined up to hit the lock mechanism correctly.

Also make sure the rear deck shelf is in location and all the way back so its no hitting the rear hatch too early and pressing on the trunk lid.

See my thread here about the rear hatch / trunk lock and what its looks like.

Thanks and hope that helps.

I had this same problem. Turned out to be that water inside the boot lid seal had frozen solid.

I had this same problem, sometimes would not open, other times could not close it. Ended up being the micro switch in the latch mechanism. Had corrosion and stuck into the opening position. I purchased the new hatch release assembly from ECS, fixed everything.

thank you for all of the tips and suggestions guys. i searched all about this issue before i posted but saw nothing about the mechanical latch closing but the electrical signal not "getting" it.

looks like this issue really did clear up with the warm weather. i took the latch all apart and found there wasn't anything wrong from what i could see. it was either sticky from low temps or there was water that froze something up. it's all gone now!! :D

You are welcome, keep an eye on it.
And spray a little spray lubricant in there, in your case. To try to prevent it in the future. If you have it come back, you have the links to possible solutions.
