My tranny "forgot"

I bought a 2003 Mini not long ago and have wanted one for a long time. I remember seeing the Mini's race at Spa, Belgium in 1964. At the time, Spa was the fastest road course in the world so the Mini's were flat out most of the time.
Since BMW, the builder of the Ultimate Driving Machine, started building them, I thought that I was getting into a fine automobile. I've had a couple of Beamers and I loved them. A few days ago, I was going into town for some groceries. When I left my driveway, the automatic (6 speed) transmission wouldn't shift gears. It seems to be stuck in 6th gear and won't accelerate. I spoke to a Mini tech and he said that sometimes the electrical unit in the tranny "forgets" how to shift and has to be re-programed.
My problem is that I live over a hundred miles from the nearest dealer. I have a local tech that I trust (something I can't say about the dealer) says he can do the job if he had the software. Does anyone know if or where I might be able to get a copy of the software needed to "re-train" my transmission? Any help would be welcome.

You can't get the software. The dealer has it or a shop that has the proper tools and software can do it. He can buy the software but I doubt he would want to.
