Turbo Noise
Turbo Noise
Hi folks,
Over the past few days i've noticed an increase in noise when my turbo kicks in.
The car is a bog standard fjcw with 25k on the clock, it almost sounds like it sucking in air, check for loose pipes but cant find anything.
Had the car for about 5-6 months now but its never been this loud when the turbo kicks in, its like a whining noise as if i had an aftermarket induction fitted which i dont, really opens up for having a standard intake. Almost like a creaking/griding noise.
No real loss of power. Plenty oil.
Any Ideas? :/

Bumping it up there :/ Anyone?
Picking up anti roll bar bushes from the dealer tomorrow so the service manager is going to have a quick look at it while I'm there.
Will let you know how it goes, any ideas before I go appreciated so I don't look like a complete n00b

+1 on CountryBoy.
If it sounds like an air leak then you need to follow the path. Check the inlet tube from the airbox to the turbo. Just cause it is connected it doesn't have to be sealed.
Check from the turbo outlet down behind the radiator. It will have a connection to the intercooler muffler and then from the muffler to the intercooler.
Coming from the passenger side of the intercooler it comes up behind the radiator and connects to a hard tube that runs under the metal rail in the engine compartment from front to back.
After that, the hard tube connects to a elbow that goes down behind the motor and under the airbox to the intake.

Sounds like it could be the friction wheel of the belt tensioner, see SI M 11 03 09:
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M11 03 09 dated December 2009.
SUBJECT
Whistling Noise from the Water Pump Area
MODEL
R55, R56, R57 produced up to June 2009
SITUATION
A whistling or squealing noise is heard from the engine at idle and/or at higher engine speeds.
CAUSE
1. Noise is caused by the water pump.
2. Noise is caused by the friction wheel of the belt tensioner.
PROCEDURE
1. Run the engine up to the operating temperature. Confirm that the noise is coming from the area around the water pump during engine idle speed.
2. Increase the engine speed up to 1,000 rpm.
3. If a noise disappears at 1,000 rpm or higher, replace the water pump. Refer to Repair Instruction RA11 51 00, found in MINI TIS.
4. If a noise is still present at 1,000 rpm or higher, replace the friction wheel of the belt tensioner with the improved part, P/N 11 28 7 571 833. Refer to Repair Instruction RA11 28 035.

Thanks for the info so far guys, going to BMW this afternoon so hopefully find something. It's a 2009 model,
So far its had a decoke, tensioner replaced and cam timing reset in the last 2 months.
Not fun :/
I'm thinking this issue is unrelated?
