Repeated failure of Timing Chain Tensioner after 180miles
Repeated failure of Timing Chain Tensioner after 180miles
I have 06 mini s convertible with 78,xxxmi on the odometer. Right before i purchased the vehicle the PO showed me he had the chain tensioner and guides replaced by mini. after driving the vehicle for about 2000mi it started to sound like a diesel. Before i replaced the tensioner i took of the timing cover and i noticed the chain tensioner was collapsed and not touching the guide rail. I Then proceeded to replaced the chain tensioner because i thought maybe it was faulty. Iproperly released the tensioner after it was installed using a flat metal bar. I drove 180miles and now the noise is back. I cant figure out why my mini's chain tensioner keeps failing. Has any one out there been through this before? Im debating if i should replaced the oil pump..... any advise would help thanks
Did you inspect the timing chain tensioner guide so it is pivoting on the top bolt correctly.

Also is the screw plug in correctly against the tensoner?

tensioner guide (3) is pivoting correctly (just replaced both tensioners)
The screw plug is installed correctly against the tensioner. I also installed the new black plastic piece that come with the tensioner.
Is it worth replacing the oil pump if the oil light is not on in the instrument cluster?
I'd like to also test the oil pressure but i can not find an oil pressure port
I would also like to add at start up the diesel noise occurs for about 2 seconds then goes away, then after about two minutes of driving the diesel noise occurs all the time.

I have a bit of a guess....
Was the motor rebuilt and the head or block Honed/decked?
On another board, the owner had a similar issue.... basically he had rebuilt head...and the machining had made the part slightly shorter..so the CHAIN ended up being a bit too long...went through 2 tensioners on his car...before they made a fix

yes zippy, the engine was rebuilt. do you have the link to that board/post?
today i replaced the oil pump, installed new rubber seals on the oil pump inlet and outlet, and installed anew crankshaft seal.
i used compressed air and blew out the oil tensioner hole to get rid of any sludge. however i did not see any sludge.
do they sell a shorter chain? or a tool to take out a link? wouldnt that mess up the timing?
i dont know if this is possible but maybe i can shim the chain tensioner closer to the guide?

You'll probably need a chain tensioner spacer if a thicker head gasket was not used.

An thicker headgasket might fix it, but i think the fix worked for Nathan.....without redoing a headgasket. Sounds like you are comfortable with the insides of a motor though....good thread...wish i could post it...but it gets blanked out ******....
a bit of info from the other site...hope it helps...
I like to give credit where credit is due...this info is from another site...and the name gets blanked out....
Hope it helps you!!

Might have fixed this today with the help of Jan, Chad and Anson of Best Motor Werks.
The rattle was back and really bad. Doing some more investigating it was determined that the head was decked at the last rebuild, but only 0.002 was removed. Not enough to really make a difference. However, that's not the first time it was decked and the amount shaved off in total is not known. The brain trust was thinking the tensioner did not have enough reach in it to pick up the slack. Since it had been making the noise on startup for some time it was also determined that there may be wear on the plastic chain guides too.
We thought it might be best to give the tensoner a bit more reach before going in and replacing all the guides, sprockets and chain. Figuring it could be an inexpensive fix if it worked.
So...how to give the tensioner a bit more reach? A washer!

I used a washer , did the job👍
I had the rattle on start up, saw the washer mod, tried it, worked fine...
Thats a great mod. What was the thickness on the washer ?
