The third brake light LED strip is on all the time. Tail Light/Brake Lights are not on. Any ideas?

It's an 06 MINI Cooper S with 40k miles

 

this light is controlled by the "GCU" general control unit - which would appear to be "confused"

try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes which should cause the GCU to 're-boot'

if that doesn't work it could be a wiring short and the first place I'd look would be where the wires come out of the main body and pass into the hatch

 

The re-boot seems to have worked. Wish there was something that simple to do when I get confused.
