2007 Mini - Rough Idle

My car ran fine, but started sputtering when I would slow down or stop (not every time, but more and more frequently) and would almost stall. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed a programming issue. Paid $120 to have it "re-programmed." That didn't fix the problem so took the car back. They then determined it needed a new ignition coil and spark plugs - $250. That didn't fix it either so they asked for another $200+ to run further tests. Results were that it passed the leak down test and compression test. The cam shaft timing was a little off so they re-set it. Then replaced the timing chain tensioner - another $140, which was half-priced. Still not fixed. Now they say they need to remove the cylinder head for $2,300. I probably spelled everything wrong above because I know nothing about cars. Any advice or ideas?

HI,

Have you checked a valve cover body? (Plastic top for your engine). Specially around PCV port area. if you see any kinda oil mist, then I guess you may need to replace it (clogged pcv). If it is not clear, wipe the area with clean towel. For my case, before it cracked, it showed symptom rough idle when I started a car. One day I got check engine light with hissing (vacuum leak sound) from it. Maybe your valve cover will go out soon?

my 2 cents.

Thanks. I can't really check anything myself as the car is still at the dealership (almost 2 weeks now). Just trying to figure out if the steps they are taking and the pricing sounds logical.

After being in the shop for 34 days and most recently the cylinder head removed and 3 valves replaced ($2,600), it is still not working. Any clues out there?

I wanted to bump this thread as I am having the same issue. Did you ever get it resolved?

Sounds like the shop your taking your car to is taking you for a ride. Is this a BMW or MINI dealership?
