When is a squeak not a squeak?

I've been hearing a noise from my MCS over the past year or so--not every time I drive, but often enough. If I'm driving, it sounds like it's coming from the passenger's side; when I'm riding, it sounds like it's coming from the driver's side. I believe it's toward the rear of the car, but I'm not sure. It sounds like, and I've assumed it was a suspension squeak...until today.

Today I was driving at highway speeds and it was chirping away at about cricket speed (typical), when I happen to take my foot off the gas. It suddenly occurred to me that the squeak went away! Foot on, squeaks. Foot off, no squeak--instantly. I also tried slipping the car in neutral (I have a manual), and that also triggered silence.

It happened that today was our local MINI club meeting, and I mentioned it to the gang. Some suggested belts. Anyone have anything else to suggest? We're talking 84,000+ miles on a very dependable (knock on wood) R56, which has had almost none of the teething problems mentioned in these pages. I hate to go to the dealer without having some ideas, partly because I don't like fishing expeditions, and partly because it doesn't sound every time. It IS getting more dependable, though.

I just had a chirping/squeaking sound fixed by replacing the serpentine belt.

R56 squeak

Hi,

I have a 2007 R56 with a rear squeak also... I'm hoping I can find some answers here in the forum.. seems on my car it's in the shock/suspension area in the rear....

I'll look around and see what I find..

I can push the rear of the car down and I can make the car squeak.. very frustrating...

Update: Although the serpentine belt looked good, Hubby replaced it anyway. All was quiet...for 3 days.

Next option?
