Check Engine light ON and squeaky noise

I stop by grocery store after a hour long fun drive, start up the car, drive off parking lot everything seems fine then the Service Engine Soon light come on follow by the EML light, then some very loud squeaky noise come from engine bay. The car start to run really rough, I park and restart the car. The EML light was gone but the noise sounds like the coming from belt area but cannot really tell which belt causing the problem. Since I was close by home, I manage to drive really really slow back home, just by the time I reach my drive way, the noise were gone but the Service Engine Soon light still on.
I open the hood to check under the hood, nothing seems abnormal but a little bit rubber smell, all the belts are in places, engine oil level is fine. Start up the car then the everything went back to normal, it just like it never happen.
I make an appointment for Monday to check on the car but wonder if I should driver the car now.
The weather is kind of hot (around mid 80F) and I was driving with A/C on and I was pushing it a little on my way home.
roll:
could this causing by the belt slipping? just guessing.

I'm thinking he will find it to be a failed crank damper....

Crank pulley might be the problem. I'm not driving the car now after did some research online. Hopefully it is nothing else.

Are you talking about the supercharge whining noise?
it was the loud squeaky noise while this happen to my car, and it start to run really rough.
the noise is gone as well as all the warning lights. It drives like it never happen after the short episod yesterday ( (I took it out last night and drive for few miles without turning on A/C- nothing seems wrong) but I don't want to take any chances so I will have the shop look at it tomorrow. the rubbery smell and the noise did scare me.

any suggestion on the replacement crank pulley?
Light weight alum. crank pulley cost less than $200, the super damper ATI cost almost double.
anyone have some input on these two choices?
thank u all again for the help.

My suggestion is to stay with a dampened pulley if you plan on keeping the car....the ati is tge mostc$$, but still less than the oem, and for a few $$ there is also another sampened one...not as sexy as the ati, but still better than the oem..
..due to cost concerns, that will be the one i go with....my crank damper is on it lasts legs....can see the rubber in poor shape...kinda shunk/cracking..
And can move the damper with a breaker bar too ewsily...
It will let go soon...
The ati is loved by racers amd engine builders, but for my streer car, the better than oem one waymotorworks sells (still sfi approved) will be fine imo.

thank you ZippyNH, I will look into both ATI and Fluid Crank Damper, most likely I might go with the ATI ( I would like to keep this car as long as i can). This is my second R53, sold my 06 R53 MCS in order to get this 05 JCW.

On my car it runs no different but the sound is their its not over heating the only problem is when I step on the gas I get a high squeal usually at 3k rpm as I change gears the sound gets lower when I hit 3k it's louder and by 5 or 6 gear Im going so fast I can't no longer hear it

confirmed, broken crank pulley. - Luckily it did not cause any other damage.
ATI Crank Pulley ordered today, and highly recommend Way Motor Works, very nice to deal with (super friendly).
Also find a local MINI specialist
N&J Tuning - Jackson is very knowledgeable on MINIs and very pleasant to deal with.
