DYI Clutch Replacement

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum but it seems like most of you guys don't do your own work. I don't mean this is a bad way... it's just an observation.

Anyway, I don't have a choice but to do my on work. The closest dealer is over 100 miles away and the only local guy that works on Mini's is backed up for 6 weeks (I gotta have my car MUCH sooner than that).

I have a 2002 R50 with a manual transmission and a bad clutch. I need to replace it so I'm asking for help.

The local guy here says he pulls the engine and transmission together to replace the clutch and I'm wondering if that's normal??? It seems like overkill to me and he wants a butt load of money to do it.

I'd like to think of myself as a better than average home mechanic. I've worked on almost every kind of car from the 1950's to present but I've had lots of experience with Volkswagen's, Volvo's and Mercedes. This is my first Mini and so far it's been relatively easy to work on.

Can someone give me a general rundown on the R&R of the transmission and maybe recommend a service manual worth having?

I'm under the impression that the '02 R50 does not use the dual mass flywheel... is this true? If so is the Valeo clutch kit of respectable quality?

Thanks a lot for your help and I look forward to your replies.

Tony

I just did this myself. By using the search function I found dozens of threads that helped me.

Why not look at what hundreds of respondents have said to the same question. I will start you off.
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ml#post1451152

Then, if you have specific questions that you can not find the answer for, others can add to the knowledge already on the forum for everyone to use. No sense repeating what is already out there.

The R50 is going to be different, but very similar in most ways.

Thanks for the link to the thread... that's really good information and very helpful.

I do apologize for not doing a better search before asking my question. My search took me to many threads about people taking their cars to dealers or independent shops to have the clutch replaced which weren't very helpful.

I'll do better next time... thanks!

Just reviving an old thread to add a DIY link for replacing the clutch on an R52/R53 (similar to R50):

Good link... thanks! There are a lot of useful links on that site. I'll be using for some other projects. Really good stuff.

We are just wrapping up the R56 articles on ours right now. I believe clutch is on the last list of items to get done. Be sure to keep an eye out.

There is a good one here to get you started

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-flywheel.html

If you are doing the clutch I would recommend the FX 100 as its a dual mass to single mass conversion for the R56 and they have a steel options. The Dual mass can be an expensive part and it cannot be shaved or resurfaced.

If you need any help , let me know. I work on my own MINIs everyday.

Hope so! Discussing it now to see when we will most likely have it live. I believe the article itself is done, but just needs to be uploaded to the database. And of course if you need a clutch, we have them HERE.
