Clutch replacement -- and flywheel, too?

With 163,000 miles on my 2003 S, I am not surprised to be looking at a clutch replacement. The dealer tells my mechanic that the flywheel should be replaced at the same time, as it is not machinable. The price of the flywheel is $1,100 for the part only. Have you had your clutch replaced? Flywheel, too? Why or why not? Thanks.

I would look at buying a used clutch and flywheel - I picked up a lightly used clutch and flywheel, with 15k on them, for my 05 MCS for $125 shipped. And if you can't find a lightly used OEM just buy after market, like the Valeo Single Mass

I would never recommend this. Used parts of this nature could land you with a hefty repair bill in the future as you don't know what you are getting.

You can get a Luk clutch kit for fairly cheap and a dual mass flywheel for about 500 USD. The reason it costing you so much is that you are buying from the dealer.

Luk for 495...

You could say that about virtually every used part for a car, save ones that are cosmetic only.

And? Clutches like struts and a few other bits I don't recommend used, especially when you can get them new for a bit more. That being said, a part that is fairly easy to swap might be ok to get used, but one that is going to require 5 hours plus labor would be silly not to buy new.

How many miles did you put on it? Why did you remove it? Were any of those miles tracked or autox?

You can also get a new one for less that 100 more.

Don't go to the dealer for this work. Get a good clutch kit and have it installed by a good independent mechanic.

Valeo or luk should work for you.

Just an FYI, but while you are getting that done, might as well change the master and slave cylinders as well. They are fairly cheap and on your milage would likely need to be replaced.

The most cost effective kit that includes a flywheel is the Valeo Single Mass kit, and has proven to be pretty reliable.
Don't even consider used parts, this job is too big to do twice.

I wouldn't bother with a clutch master cylinder, In ten years of working on MINI's I've only ever seen one failed.

As for Fidanza I've seen several of those flywheels with issues so I never recommend them.

+1 on the Valeo Single Mass Flywheel kit

Also, I would NEVER install a used cluth and/or flywheel on a R53. You might think you can save a few $$, but I'm sure it will have to be replaced again soon as they are notorious to fail. Some guys on this forum have had to replace their original clutch after only a few 10K miles... (See https://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/r50-r53-hatch-talk-2002-2006/215509-at-how-many-miles-did-you-have-to-replace-the-stock-clutch-in-your-r53.html)

To be honest, I would have gone with this kit if I didn't have a Luk kit sitting in my storage unit.
