Engine Whine on an 08 Turbo

A few days ago, my Clubman S with Stage One package started to make a very noticeable whine as the engine revved and accelerated. When I shift gears and the RPM's go down, the whining noise lowers as well. I have 70K miles on it.

Anyone else have this come up? Don't want to take it to the dealer just yet until I get some idea of what it might be from others.

Thanks.

I have a whine as well. But it's completely dependent on the engine temp. At cold it has a very noticeable whine, as it warms up it slowly gets quieter. At operating temp it is gone. It is currently at the dealership being looked at. I'll let you know when they find out what it is.

Stage one meaning? Does the whine follow the rpms, or does it follow the boost map/curve? Does this happen in/out gear?

My 08 S whines as you describe and I've found that its the friction wheel. With my car running I can pull on the friction wheel toward the passenger side of the car and the whine goes away. I've already replaced the friction wheel and belt once and it helped(quieter), but the noise is still there. Hopefully you have a similar issue and its not turbo related.

You referring to the belt tensioner?

No, the friction wheel is between the belt and the water pump.

So I'll reply to my own reply. Just got my MCS back from the dealer. The whine they called "normal". Not fully convinced but will have an independent mini specialist as a second opinion. Mine was not transmission related, followed engine rpm, with clutch out. Also had in the the engine that would happen at random times, not necessarilly temp related. Turned out it was the oil pump.

It varies directly with the RPMs.

Well, the heat went out as well and today the temperature light popped on. It is at the shop right now. We shall know soon.

Heat issue was a cracked thermostat housing. So that got replaced and heat works fine. Mechanic couldn't pinpoint the source of the whine. On the way home, I noticed the turbo wasn't kicking in. Then the Check Engine light came on. Back to the shop tomorrow.

Rpm dependent whine and 70k is most likely to be the turbo.
Have a look at this for a starter...https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...sign-flaw.html

And this...https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad-at-72k.html

Update: Entire timing chain assembly replaced. Dealership said it "exploded" and there was metal all inside the engine. Great. $2000 later.... Turbo working and no whine. I don't know what to think except that I'm done with Mini.

Wow, it's disappointing the diagnosis by the dealer was done so poorly. This is a well known problem and I would think they should have know to check for this.

Did your Mini ever have the timing chain repaired or the tensioner replaced previously?

If so, how long ago was it?

I had reported the cold start chatter before, but dealer always said they couldn't replicate it.

I traded in my Mini for a Camry day before yesterday. Mini has proven to be an expensive habit I needed to break before it broke me.
