Clutch

Hi,

The clutch on my MINI 03(not an S) needs to be replaced. The dealership quote is between $1,400 to $1,800. Anyone in this forum has experience changing the clutch? Thank you.

That's pretty spot on for the parts alone. If that's including their time, take them up on it.

Clutches are relatively easy (if you have the tools and a transmission jack). It's just time consuming (about a half days work with a minimum time around 3.5 hours). There are a few videos on YouTube about changing a clutch that work generally with any vehicle, but you might source the Bentley manual to get explicit instructions.

I had mine changed out 2 weeks ago. When you say the "clutch" needs to be changed does that also include the flywheel? How many kms on the car? Usually when they open the car up, they inspect the flywheel for hot spots. This will be your case if the clutch has actually been slipping.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in the 03 non-S I think it's a twin mass flywheel so if damaged it will require replacement as it can't be resurfaced. Not sure if that is included in your quote or not. The single mass flywheels can be resurfaced so it's cheaper.

For the record, my clutch and flyhweel change put me at about €1900. If your quote doesn't include the flywheel, you're looking at about 600+ additional for the cost of the flywheel.

Hi,

Thank you for your response . You are absolutely right. My MINI has twin mass flywheel. I was told if they do not have to replace the flywheels the price will be $1,400 but if they have to replace them the cost is going to be $1,800. My car has approx 86,000 miles(I believe in kms is 138403.584). Wow you were charge $2,506.79 US Dollars that is a significant amount. Both prices includes labor and parts.

What year is your MINI?

My Mini is a 2009 Clubman (75,000km). It has the diesel engine.

Don't go too much by the exchange rate to compare costs. The price you were quoted ($1800) sounds about right for work done by the dealership. If I were you, I'd budget for the flywheel change. In any case, since you have high mileage, it would be good for you to change the flywheel now otherwise in the not too distant future, you'll just have to pay to open up the car again and pay a 2nd time for all the labour. The flywheel is easy to change once the clutch is out for replacement. Labour cost is minimal, it's just the parts cost of a new flywheel.

Unfortunately, I am discovering that once the mileage accumulates on these cars, they can be rather expensive to maintain. A cheaper option would be to go to an independent garage, but there you don't get the same coverage as with the dealership.

Enjoy the new clutch I think you'll see a big difference in driving characteristics after the service.

non S cars don't have a dual mass flywheel FYI.

$1400 seems to be cheap for a dealer, I know are price is closer to $1000

I'm facing this operation on my 2003 R50. It has 83,000 miles (about 134,000km). The clutch is working well, it's just that the throwout bearing has been rattling for the last 20,000 miles or-so.

My mechanic (an independent Merc/BMW/Porche/Audi/Mini specialist) said it would be roughly $2,000 U.S. without the flywheel and $2,500 with. Using all OEM parts at $80/hr labor.
