Sunroof Rattle Near Open/Close Switch

So there is now a rattle behind the panel that the sunroof's open/close switch is on. Has anyone managed to repair this?

If you turn upside down with your work boots on and kick real hard right in the switch where you open and close the sunroof it will make it worse but if you keep kicking it enough stuff will break and fall out and you will solve this problem.... I'm just telling you what I have wanted to do. I hope someone fills us in on the problem because it drives me crazy. I did open my sunroof and put a folded shop rag behind the flaps that raise up and then closed the sunroof and it stopped. This is not a fix but it will temporarily fix your sanity.

UGH I hate the noise. My boyfriend acts like it's not that bad but I can barely talk when it's rattling. Sometimes I will hold the bottom part of the sunroof with force to shut it up. I'm sure it's an easy fix, just an awkward spot to play around with.

I found those little flaps to be the source

I opened the roof and took a good close look at those flaps and could see the contact point when they were closed

I bought some self adhesive felt and cut a strip about as long as the flap is wide and about 1/2 inch. (you could use the felt side of velcro) I stuck that where the rub mark was.

Never heard the noise again . . . had the car several more years.

That's a great idea! I'll try it out just as soon as it stops raining. Thanks!

This is all it is. I did this the third day I owned my '03. Been silent ever since.

Although I used pieces cut from a black yoga mat. i didn't want to use anything that would hold moisture. I first used a couple pieces of bicycle inner tube (road tires) as a temp solution. That worked great too--just looked f'ugly.

Digging up an old thread because I'm still having this problem. I tried the felt strip fix and it didn't change anything. The only thing that seems to make it better is if I pinch between the bottom molding and the upper molding. If I do it in exactly the right spot it goes away completely. If this were the flaps then pulling them further away from the sunroof wouldn't make it BETTER. Ideas?

Spot on. And if your fingers are thin enough even with the roof closed you can slide them into there and press down on the flaps a smidge to see if the noise goes away....that is how I figured this one out.

I'd suggest trying other soft things. I really don't think "felt strips", as simple as that sounds, would quiet the noise I used to have.

I tried many different things in many different spots on and around the spring flaps before I finally got it to quiet. Just putting some kind of bumper material in the rub-spots wasn't enough. What did work best was a couple 4" sections of bicycle inner tube (road bike) taped to the top/rear of the flaps. This was really ugly, but provided enough compaction to quiet them.

I've since found 4 key places to stick some 1/4" thick black foam strips.

on my 02 I also found that the dash was just close enuf to the glass to produce a rattle in certain temperatures. There again, inserting a piece of felt 'tween the dash plastic and the glass solved the problem. (Many cars have just such a pad)

I big problem I had with my 02 (not unique to that car) was finding the true source of the sound. The buzz I eliminated by felting the sunroof flaps I long thought to be in the dash . . .

Actually, there is a TSB of sorts on using this very product and works with great success. Probably a matter of knowing just where to apply it.

It's not costly and nothing to lose.

What I did was first open the sunroof and check all the torx bolts on the sliding mechanism. They were all snug and besides, they looked like they were painted.

I then pulled back on that molding until it separated from roof liner and the other molding piece. I did this by simply grabbing a hold of it and attempting to slide it towards the rear of the car. It will eventually pop out. By the way, I was sitting on the headrest so that I could observe what was inside and make sure that I wasn't busting a clip or something.

Speaking of clips, there seems to be three contact points for the molding (which is also connected to that oval console with the sunroof controls) holding in place to the roof. The middle one is some sort of keyed slide (looks like a washer that holds the console up). You will observe marks on either side of that washer-like slide. I figured this is where I should put some felt tape.

The next two spots a roughly centered between that console and each edge of the sunroof. You can realize those easily because the molding is indented towards the seats. There, I placed another strip of felt tape.

After I put both sides on and slid the molding back into place (making sure the center one slides back into the keyed slot, and snapping the two outer ones into place) I put my most thumping base song on, "Got 2 Luv U" in my case, and no more rattle.
