Hello-
I am a new cooper owner, and am not very experienced with them. It is a very hot day, and I was running my car on errands for a couple hours. When I got back (about half an hour ago) I got out of the car to hear a VERY loud fan (I'm assuming). As I sit in my house, I can still hear it running. I have heard it is normal for a loud fan to cool off the car, but is it normal for it to take this long?

if it's blowing hot air out through the hood scoop it's likely your intercooler is heat soaked. I don't know how long it takes to cool off, but I've had mine start up in a parking garage as I walked away and it was off by the time I got back.

heat soaked intercooler? That's a new one around here . . .

If it runs for a minute or less don't worry TOO MUCH about it.

If it runs for 2 minutes ..... worry.

anyway, that happened right after I got my car and I didn't know what was causing the heat buildup under the bonnet. I felt a lot of hot air billowing out the hood scoop, figured it was partly due to the supercharger+intercooler but mostly due to a ~95% humidity, 90+ degree day in downtown boston.

problem with search is some people don't know how to phrase the query properly and/or others resurrect 5 year old threads on a topic hoping to get a question answered by someone who may no longer be a member or mini owner all together, so *shrug*

 

check your coolant, ive had that before and somehow my coolant disappeared. its a mystery only scooby do can figure out because i have no leaks anywhere. But if its not cooling your engine enough the fans hit to take over.

I've had this same issue with my 2002 Cooper. When I shut the car off, the fan wouldn't quit. I was able to fix it temporarily by pulling the fuse from the engine fuse box that runs the fan; but when I replaced the fuse the fan would restart again.

There was another fuse within the fan shroud assembly itself that had failed and needed to be replaced. It wasn't too expensive and it solved that problem.

 

 

If you're not overheating, chances are it's a stuck fan relay. Do you have the 2-plug fan wire harness near the driver side hood latch? That means you still have the fan w/ an inaccessible relay in the assembly. That relay was transferred in 03 up models to the fuse box coz it was prone to sticking & not switching off. A work around would be to wire a kill switch inside. It's better & more convenient than unplugging the fan harness. Some just give the area where the relay is a good tap to turn it off. It's located near the top center of the fan assembly. Try searching on this.

 

I have a similar issue. the fan goes off when i turn the A/C on even when the car is cold :/ im guessing its an issue with the thermostat
