i recall reading that there's a clanking noise when changing from 1st to 2nd... and apparently, that was normal?

well for a while now, I noticed that there's that metal clanking during gear changes aside from 1st to 2nd... just about all the gears actually... it doesn't sound like it's supposed to be happening....

should i take it to the dealership or is this really normal?

btw, it doesn't happen all the time... maybe like... 60-70% of the time?

Pardon me...do you have a 5-speed Cooper or a 6-speed MCS?

This happens on my 6-speed MCS too and from what my MINI tech says it's normal.

It seems that he has another failed "R65" Midland Gears Cooper 5-speed gearbox.

My dealer has said that it is normal in my 6 speed MCS. It happens in all the gears, but since you are going slower and the car is quieter from 1st to 2nd, you are able to hear it. I don't know, I used to worry about it a lot though.

That clanking bugs me too! It doesn't sound normal. I took it to the dealer, though, and the mechanic said it was normal. It sure is loud, but yeah, I only hear it from 1st to 2nd.

Don't know about that cold weather bit making it louder ... I'm in Hawaii.

What makes it seem that way? We don't know which transmission this person has.

my 6MT snickers into gear and it appears normal on these getrag trannies.

on very cold days, i notice that it snickers more until the tranny is warmed up.
i think the syncro's don't work as well in 10F temps as in 50F+ temps. just
go easy on the gates until the car's warmed up.

Yeah on ocassion I also hear this "Metallic" sound going from 1st to 2nd in my '04 MCS. It appears to be normal. The transmission is an absolute delight!

So it wasn't, but now it appears normal if it's on an MCS?

I'm not trying to be a PIA here, just observing what I see as jumping to the gun regarding the well documented Cooper 5 speed tranny problem.

I am waiting for a MINI NA rep to post their robotic reply regarding the midlands issue here, and I am not being sarcastic. I would like to see some official acknolwedgement.

It would be interesting to see if the Ford Focus SVT does this since it has the same Getrag tranny. Next time I see one at the autocross I'll ask the owner. Anyone else know if the SVT does this?

Never driven an SVT, but I am sure my local Ford dealer has a stockpile of them catching dust at the back of their lot.
