Radiator fan question.
Radiator fan question.
Hi everyone. I tried to do a search prior to this so I apologize in advance if this has already been asked. My question is this. I have an 03 S with the 3 pin and 2 pin connection style radiator fan. I just replaced the fan a few months back with a new one because it had no low speed operation and just yesterday the car started overheating. Turns out that the new fan was not coming on at all. It was working perfectly for a while but not anymore. What I did realize though is that if I disconnect the 2 pin connector the fan kicks on at higher temps and when the AC is on. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thank guys.
Your year/style fan has the relay on the unit, as opposed to the later style which has the relay(s) in the fuse box/panel. Not sure if that system has two relays (on the fan housing?) or just one. You might check the current coming through the 3-pin connector - with the A/C on and with it off and with the 2-pin connector on and off - to see what's powering what. I don't know why unplugging the relay would allow the high speed circuit to come on. Something's obviously shorting out somewhere.
If it was working when new just a few months ago, do you have a warranty on it?

Curious. According to this schematic, http://www.bmw-planet.com/diagrams/r...0000019176.htm for the 12/2002 through 3/2003 there is one relay in the fan that switches on high speed. The two-wire connector provides coil energizing power to this relay and disconnecting it means you would have no high-speed fan. It is known that with certain minis the low-speed fan turns on when the AC is on. When the low-speed fan is on the steering pump fan will also be on. You might check that to see if it ever gets power. Also check over the fuses. There are 5A fuses in series with each of the high- and low-speed fan relay coils. There are 30A and 50A fuses for the switched contacts of the low- and high-speed relays.
I also read that the relay is on the back of that fuse panel: to remove the fuse panel and look for K69223. I didn't see a way to remove the fuse panel without pulling out the interior cover trim, etc, and it didn't look like there were any relays back there anyway.
I do have a #F-31, which has a fan icon on the printed diagram, where there is a 30A fuse (which is good).
My browser won't clearly read that BMW-planet diagram you posted above, so I can't even browse through what else they might have.
TIA.
Bradley, can you clarify something for me? I'm trying to find out if/where the relay and/or fuse is for the power steering fan ('06 R53). I've read that it's in the inside kick-panel fuse panel, #F-41 but I don't have an F-41 - mine only go to F-40. Are the numbers continued in the engine compartment fuse block?
