Can I use generic power steering tubing to replace the supply line and just re-use the old shielding? I don't want to spend $40 plus shipping if I don't have to.

Why even spend $10 on fancy power steering tube? Just use garden hose.

If I'm going to use a garden hose, why not make it out of paper mache?

Since more specifics are apparently needed, are there components of the supply line included in a stock line that I don't see when I look at the shielded line sitting in my car? I'll pay the money for a new line if there is a good reason for it but I don't want to spend the money if I don't have to.

What a legend! I've spent $800 on ECS in this project alone, would have been $6000 at the dealers, you guys are doing Gods work, thank you!

It took 5 hours start-to-finish (because I took my time and had to make two runs to find the right sized socket (22mm), swivel adapter, and extension bar to access and remove the bolt).

The replacement hose was $68 at Pelican Parts. The fluid was $22. The crush washers they sent me were the wrong part (too small) so I was forced to re-use the existing ones. Will keep an eye on it and if they leak, I'll buy the correct size (which means draining the PS fluid again (messy and pricey).

Here are some pics of what I saw.

Not getting the pictures loaded - get a "404 error" - have these pictures been moved? Thanks either way...

I've got most of the list - two Mini's, a 2002 MCS, 2008 Clubman, plus an Arctic Cat with snow plow..., I've got two floor jacks (but no jackstands yet!) ramps to pull the car up for oil changes, lots and lots of tools, a pretty awesome sound system (used to be in the house) and a microwave. Need a keg-o-rator and some heat - it's pretty chilly this time of year! I expect I'll find that out tonight when I begin crawling back around L'il Red!

Propane or Kerosene Jet heater is what you need. Heats up quick and can d a big garage. Have one and it works well.

Not yet. It's pretty cold out to do much laying around on the floor of the garage. And I have an F350 for when the weather is wintry so I have been slow to attend to it. I put the car up on ramps and got under it - i still needed to jack the body up as the ramps are great for oil changes when you know what you're looking for. Not as helpful to see where the leak is coming from. I'd like to know that before I begin buying parts. There has to be a leak as the reservoir is almost empty and it left a big mess on the garage floor, mostly confined to a tray I had thoughtfully placed under the car for just such an occasion. I can see the P/S fan and pump but the fluid seems to come from above, possibly in front of the pump. I am wondering about the P/S rack. There doesn't seem to be any problem with the connections at the bottom of the reservoir. I can't get a good look at the underside, however. Might have to take it to my local tire place just to get it up high enough to take a good look.

Hello NAMers, I replaced a leaking return hose (purchased from ecstuning.com) yesterday and to my disappointment I woke this morning to find a puddle of power steering fluid in my driveway. I didn't know the torque specs for the hollowed bolt so I simply wrenched it down nice and snug. Obviously not snug enough. Does anyone know the torque for this bolt?

From Bentley Manual 2002-2006

High pressure line to steering pump 10 nm (89 in-lb) (page 320-15)
NOTE THIS IS pounds per inch (not foot pounds)

Fluid lines to steering rack and it says to replace the seals (page 320-18)
high pressure 34nm (25 ft-lb)
low pressure 40 nm (30 ft-lb)

Thanks for the reply rwkeating. A friend of mine, professional mechanic, sent me the specs. The problem doesn't appear to lie within the work I've done, rather in the work I have not. While jostling the reservoir to remove the return hose I loosened the seal of the supply hose. The car is 10 years old, I should have purchased the entire kit and replaced both hoses. Rookie move.

I have both hoses to replace on my '04. Need to locate the 22mm socket. Waiting on the exhaust header to show up so I can do that too. Any benefit to dropping the header out first?

Sure, dropping the exhaust manifold will definitely provide you a bit more wiggle room to install the supply hose as long as you remove the heat shield that lies between the manifold and the power steering rack. The return hose is fairly easy to access with the front driver's side wheel removed and use of a universal joint and extension added to your ratchet. Don't forget to use both washers when installing the banjo bolt at the bottom of the return hose.

Swapped out the hoses last night, what a bear. No 22mm socket so I used a 22mm box end wrench on the banjo bolt. Will have to locate a socket so I can torque it to the proper value. Just finger tight so it will leak/purge the air when I fill it as a reminder. What a mess of grit /sand under there. I guess I should have hit the area with gunk and the pressure washer. So, the PS cooling fan was tight (no spin). Took it down and freed it up somewhat. Is the fan included in the recall? My PS pump looks new. Some BMW web site (input my vin) says my car is eligible for the recall. Leaking cooling hoses are next.

Pump and the fan, most of the time the fan gets gunk / between the fan blade and housing itself. If it blows out and spins clear, then test it with turning on the AC and let the car idle, the little PS fan should kick on, it not its bad.

The recall is on certain years. And if you had the pump replaced before or the fan, you might want to check on it because MINI is checking the older part numbers on those to replace.

Can you use a O2 sensor socket for the banjo bolt?

I need to replace my O2 sensors so I bought this 22mm socket:
