Dash "squeak" might be a bad speaker in the door!
Over the summer my '02 MC developed an annoying squeak or chirp in what I thought was in the dash on the passenger side. I finally took that side apart a couple of weeks ago and found nothing loose, and the noise didn't change. It happens only on worn pavement, not smooth pavement and not when going over bumps, dips or potholes.
Finally I got my wife to drive me around today so I could feel up under the dash and listen more closely on that side. I also started grabbing things on the door panel and discovered that when I covered up the speaker grille, the noise diminished considerably.
Upon taking apart the door, I pushed in on the bottom of the speaker cone (it had gone dead over the summer as well) and discovered exactly what was making the noise! After pulling the speaker I noticed that the foam ring around the cone had pulled almost completely away from the frame. Problem solved!
The speaker on the other side had gone dead a year ago, and new speakers were on the honey do list, but now they've moved up in priority.
So if you are looking for that dash squeak or chirp, it might be in the speaker instead. The factory ones are disturbingly cheap, so you can feel good about getting an upgrade. I had a new pair of 4x6 speakers that never got installed in a previous car, so I'm shoehorning those in but they sell mounting rings that fit 5 1/4" or 6" round ones, giving you lots of choices for replacements.
