Engine Mount(s) OEM vs. Aftermarket, also where to buy?
Engine Mount(s) OEM vs. Aftermarket, also where to buy?
Okay my wife's '05 MCS Conv. has at the very least a completely toasted front engine mount, I'm not sure about the rest, but I've got some really easy questions for the group about it.
1: I saw an aftermarket front mount from Mini Mania for $150 that is rubber on one end and solid on the other. From what I understand the OEM mount is rubber on each end. Anybody have any experience between good OEM vs aftermarket mounts for NVH issues?
2: Where should I buy an OEM mount? I don't really like my local dealership, their service department has tried to fleece me and have just plain been almost hostile to me (as an example when I was having an EVAP issue I explained that I reset the code as part of my diags procedure, they said "you can't do that, you can't reset the code, only we can!" even after I explained that I havea n ODB-II scan tool and I know my way around under hoods. Also is there a better place to get things than Mini Mania?
The car is my wife's, we're not racing it, it's just a daily driver. She will not be interested in any solution that increases the NVH levels above the already slightly harsh level of an MCS.
Thanks,
Sequoia

The mount your talking about with rubber on each end isn't a replacement for the motor mount. It's an additional damper to help the motor not rock so much, you'll still need a motor mount if you install that.
As for options there is the OEM motor mount, or our WMW/TSW motor mount. It is made of polyurethane and it is a little more solid than the oem so some cars will get NVH. But that's the price we pay to not have it fail again. Plus it allows the motor to rock less helping you get the power to the ground.
We have both in stock and ready to ship if we can help.

Any other input, particularly on the NVH between the OEM oil filled and the poly one? I know in my old Jeeps poly engine mounts are annoying for anybody but the hardcore, this isn't a hardcore vehicle.
I took a quick look under the hood last night and did see evidence of oil blowing out of that mount, this weekend I plan to crawl underneath and inspect the other mounts.
For the record the mount I was referring to from MiniMania is the lower mount, I saw it in my BentleyBook (a rather lame manual really, it ought to have a section just dealing with mounts so you don't have to read through the entire engine removal process!).

I'm pretty sure that's blown out too judging by how much rocking I saw. That also might be what South Bay Mini called a "torn control arm bushing" when tehy were trying to fleece a warrantee job for me. I carefully looked at every control arm bushing and suspension bushing on that car and could find nothing, didn't think they'd be so dim as to confuse an engine mount with a control arm!

The top mount is usually the one that fails.....it is kinda like an oil filled bubble, and the rubber tends to fatigue a bit, and tears from the rocking of the motor...and usually makes a mess from the leaking oil, pretty thick/sticky stuff when it goes on the passenger side....so it us usually easy to spot the failure if you look around the mount for the oil.
