Burnt secondary thermostat

I need some advice from those of you who are mechanically inclined. I started my car this morning (it was around 82 F this morning) and after gentle driving for less than a minute my R56 S started fuming from the hood with an electrical and rubber smell coming through. The coolant and oil level were normal. I brought it to Hassel Mini and was told that the turbo pulley rubbed on the secondary thermostat and caused a small electrical fire. The rep stated that nothing was damaged and that only the thermostat needed replacement. I'm a little skeptical and worried. What should I do? My warranty doesn't run out until next April but I don't want a disaster while driving the vehicle!

Thanks for all of your help and input.

I think you're a little bit confused about what they told you, Turbos don't have pulleys.......

Other than that I think I'd trust what the fixed......

The other thing I wonder is why you drove your car with smoke coming out from under the hood. Most people would call MINI for a tow truck.....

I know it was dumb but the car stopped smoking. I also had a lot of time constraints. I'm at work as I type. I was merely quoting the customer rep.

I would go back to the dealer and have the SA go over what was burning, and what the fix was.

What does the customer copy of the work order state ?

Someone else posted...

about wiring issues with the aux water pump for turbo cooling. Sounds like something to keep an eye on.

I'll try to find the forum member with the same issue.

I could not get the google docs upload to play nicely with this forum, so I've typed from my receipt:

They fixed all that was broken...

I'd take a look around there and see if there is a place that can wear and short. If so, protect it or make sure it can't rub so that this doesn't happen again.

I think the reference to the other similar fault may have been in one of the spontaneous engine bay fire threads.
