Yellow engine warning light

A while back, I saw a posting -can't find it now- that explained how to reset the yellow light on R50's, mine's a 2003. Does this light warn you that fuel mixture via the O2 sensors is not optimal, or a sensor is not functioning?
There's no difference to driving feel and performance, but exhaust tailpipe is a bit black - like running too rich.
A non-dealer had reset my light with his diagnostic lap top, but now the light is on again after a few months.
From memory, the posting I'm trying to find talked about disconnecting both battery posts for an hour, then connect and start without depressing the throttle, let motor warm up, switch off for a few minutes, then start and drive normally for 20-30 minutes and engine management system will remap itself, and yellow light should then go off.......does this make any sense?

I will much appreciate any comments!
