I have a mini cooper 2009 S hatchback with the same humming noise. Called Mini and mentioned the bulletin number and they told me the following

Its a Damper Part with screws: Part number: 64509231714
part cost: 227.75
part with labor: 284.93

seems a little steep to me, found the same part for $120 online but no screws and I have no idea how to install it.

Well so long for them fixing a bulletin item for free (perhaps this was common knowledge to you guys) but if you are no longer under warranty no bulletin items apply free of charge and become the cost of the owner.

email received from mini----

Hello MINIac,

So I was relayed a message to reach out to you about a question on coverage for a bulletin.. Once the vehicle is out of manufacturer warranty then we are unable to do the bulletins at no charge.. they would then become customer pay items.

Is it at all possible to hear this humming noise when the AC isn't on? I hear a harmonic hum sometimes when I start my car up in the morning, the noise doesn't stay for long. For all I know it could be a friction wheel bearing going bad?

I guess its possible to hear it when the compressor is off but doubt it. It seems the vibration of the compressor is what causes the noise. Perhaps its the timing chain thing everyone else is complaining about. I am getting the timing chain tensioner (new version) in addition to trying to fix this compressor thing.

I tried using tie wraps to hold the compressor line down to prevent it from vibrating and it made things worse (so at least I know this is the culprit) perhaps I need to tie the tie wraps in a different direction. I just think buying a $100+ counter weight is way over priced.

Here are pictures of what I did and caused things to go louder, I think I need to use tie wraps to push the line down vs towards the wheel.

Has anyone installed this themselves? My 2011 MCS makes the same noise. Easy to install without removing anything? Thanks

The dealer installed the weight/dampener per the TSB and the problem is solved.

Hi.

So, I've got a 2012 MCS that's making the exact same noise. I checked underneath it today to see if Mini actually decided to put the weight/damper on the solve the problem. Lo and behold . . .

Noise when turning A/C on?-q7fov5u.jpg

That sure looks like a weight/damper to me. Which now begs the question, why is it still making the noise? I didn't notice the noise last summer. I checked the fitment and it still seems quite snug on there. Any ideas?

Thanks!
