My Mini met a universal ball joint from a truck laying in the freeway with no place to go. Shattered the oil pan, ran for three miles to get off and stopped. Will see if it survives.

You were being sarcastic, right? 3 miles at highway speeds with no oil pressure? It should be toast.

Good luck, but a new engine is probably in your future...

I'd be talking to your insurance company about a new engine, were it me, depending on the miles and condition of your car ....otherwise, it might be time for a new MINI.

 

Yeah, nope..... What he should have done was pulled off to the side of the road and called a tow truck. Like he said above, I think a new engine is in his future.

Even if it runs again....it will never be the same....should have coasted to the side of the road....and gotten a tow.....RED LIGHTS mean engine damage is occurring NOW...STOP ASAP.
It may run a while with a fresh oil and a new pan...but the bearings are likely scarred from overheating/oil starvation. Once that happen....it is only a matter of time!

 

Call you insurance company. You'll need a motor down the road for sure. Where are you located?

Those commercials are designed to get you to buy the product and marketing groups will rig engines to run in that condition just to shoot the commercial. Trust me, I have a family in advertising.

 

This is an extreme case of oil starvation. You'd have to check every lubricated surface for damage -- not just one or two main bearings.

I'd insist on a new engine from the insurance company.

And, no, it's not an "act of nature", which would give the insurance company an out -- it's damage resulting from debris on the roadway which should be covered.

Same thing happened to me in my e36 BMW on the Cross Bronx Xpressway. It also took out my fuel filter and my car stalled immediately so no internal damage.

Good luck to you. Your engine is probably shot. Hope you have full coverage on your insurance.

 

If the object wasn't moving, insurance may cover it but you will be at-fault in a collision claim.

 

Settled with insurance - total loss, $15.3K, bought for savage $3K, repaired oilpan $1.2K, driving home today.

 

So you get 12,300 from the insurance and fix the car for 1,200?
Not bad deal. Yes it will have a salvage title but that sounds like a very good outcome for you.

 

Wow...a good used motor is only $5000 or so!!
Just transfer the reg to RI for one hour...then re-register it in your state...no junk title...some companys will even handle the transactions for you...will get you will have a clean no-junk title. Not a clean car-fax, but a clean title. It is very commonly used with restored cars that are frame off restorations that were junkyard finds....I think there is one other state that does the same thing....

 

So, are you telling us the only needed repair was the oil pan?

 

For now.... There is no telling how long the engine will survive which is probably why the insurance company wrote it off.

heh. pretty good trade off if you planned on keeping it until it was scrap. Save that left over cash until the engine goes, and drop a good on in. =) the car can have 2 lifetimes for the price of one!

Car has survived 2 months and 1500 miles without any engine problems. Now time to think about replacing bent subframe, tires, alignment, etc. Probably about $2K.
