One possible contributing (non-engine) factor to this could be the "drive-by-wire" (DBW) throttle. Both MINI's (I believe) have DBW, rather than a throttle "cable" as in older cars. The "good" news is that (screwups) can be re-programmed out. Of course, this may take a while. You might try "using" the throttle differently. On my Golf (similar DBW setup), you can "feel" the throttle manipulating the engine characteristics... as it trys to generate lots of power, get good mileage, and still meet emissions laws. It isn't a BAD feeling, feels more like coming "on-the-cam", only at certain (large) throttle openings. One of the things that can "cause" the throttle to muck with things is if you "FLOOR" it. It's trying to not generate lots of smog (among other things).

This is all a long-winded way of saying "try accelerating at different throttle percentages"; or, try moving the throttle near (but not at) "full open". You may be able to sidestep the software, while BMW is re-writing it.

Just remember: your right foot is NOT attached to the engine; it's attached to a COMPUTER (that does some calculations and COMMANDS the engine).

Have you tried to swich off the DSC or tracion control?

During my test drive with the S it made a huge difference in the acceleration in 1st gear. DSC on= sluggish off the line, but no wheel spin / DSC off= starts like a rocket

Yep, just to confirm.. that's they way they drive.. but once you get going, it shoots off like a rocket... So just when someone thinks they've beat the pants off some funny lookin dinky thing, the get to see how it looks from the rear..

Not that *I* would ever do anything like that...

Air conditioning is a big factor.

Since passing the 1300 mile mark it seems to be alot more responsive in first gear. There may be some thing to this break in period.

I don't know about that (relation to break in period). I'm past the break in -- 1800 miles -- and definitely notice it. I'm an experienced standard transmission driver (learned on one and have been driving them pretty much exclusively for the past 25 years) and I've nearly stalled the car out in first on a number of occasions.

I thought that it might be the clutch, but it really only happens in first when starting out. Otherwise, take up is smooth and feels excellent. So, it's the engine, not the clutch. And, I've had the AC off most of the time...so I know it's not that.

I've been experimenting the past day or so with turning off the DSC. This DOES give a quicker feel at take off, so that may have some relation to the bog. But it definitely seems like a software/programming issue...whether of the engine, throttle, or perhaps DSC (which can control both I believe).

Arggggh...like I said in another post (about sunroof rattle), I'm not liking the role of rolling/paying quality control inspector/troubleshooter for MINI/BMW. But, I guess that's a big "I told you so" in relation to buying a first year car.

if you really want to explode off the line you need to find the sweet spot between the clutch and the gas. We found it in my friends MCS ( mine won't be here until Nov), the thing powers right off the line every time now. You have to just get intimate with your MINI, go on, don't be afraid. I swear this works!!! And man if the MCS just doesn't keep pulling and pulling!! What a bad *** little car!!

Turned off the dsc works much better. I wonder if it can be programed in the off position. Apparently it is simular to disingaing positraction to limited slip...of well getting lots of looks in the yellow/blk stripes and lights...

cheers ya'll

Or you could just give it more gas and VERY LIGHTLY pop the clutch for a quick takeoff. 3000 rpms should do it.

Go to dealer and get upgrade, makes car run smoother, idles better when it comes to a stop, etc......service bulletin/CD software was sent in October to dealers..........typical Germans keeping it quiet to not arouse issues with Cooper..........my car runs much bettter now.............even if your car runs fine, you should upgrade...............

Has anyone with a standard Cooper done this yet? Has it helped with the "first gear bog"? Thanks, Bill
