hatchback rattle

Hi there.

I have an 09 R56 just a cooper. It has a sunroof but its a pretty rigid car. When I go over some bumps, I can hear the hatchback rattle. I took a look back there and saw the adjustable rubber bumper/screws. I backed them out all the way (maybe 1/2 a turn on) and they both deflected (giving me the impression that they were not loaded properly), so I turned them both in a turn. I still have that metal-on-metal clacking when I go over bumps. Man, it sounds like the hatchback.

Has anyone else noticed this? Resolved it?

thanks 1,000,000

An excellent opportunity to use the warranty! They'll probably replace the striker part. It's an old (and apparently unresolved) problem...

No help to you, OP, but I just thought I'd "chime in" on your rattly hatch thread instead of starting a new one... maybe your rattle is similar to mine...

I have something loose inside my rear hatch. When I open it or, more often, when I close it quickly I can hear an object of some kind moving around inside the hatch. Makes quite a racket! Everything works normally - no idea what could be inside there.

I'd like to take a peek inside the hatch. How hard is it to remove the plastic interior panel on the rear hatch? I'd be afraid of breaking it in this cold weather, so it might wait until my next dealer visit.

I thought this striker plate issue, which was very common in the first generation MINI's, would have been corrected for second gen. Either way, it's an easy fix at the dealer, covered under warranty. Though minor, I remember how annoying the noise was to me until it was diagnosed and repaired.

Is the noise a metal on metal vibration? I have that. Could someone point out on a picture the striker?

My 09 does the same thing. I have had it back to the dealer twice. I ended up fixing it myself after the dealer screwed it all up. what you are hearing is the striker hitting the latch. The dealer replaced the striker on the hatch then adjusted the latch so tight that it didn't rattle on the wat home. The first time I used the hatch it would not catch and the door ajar warning came on. I ended up taking about an hour or so taking everything apart and adjusting the latch and the bumpers (the striker is not adjustable) to get it about 90% better. Good luck !

my 05 S did this so I just took some electrician's tape and wrapped a couple layers around the U-shaped bolt. Seemed to work fine.

Still have the problem with my 09 tho.
