starting problem

right i'll start from the beginning, i front ended my mini the other month and i've slowly been replacing all the parts, radiator, bumper, engine mount, bonnet,

today i finally got everything together, the petrol gauge said it was empty so i filled it with petrol from a can, went to start the engine, ran fine for 5 minutes then died and turned off, tried to start it, started then immediately cut off.

went out 10 minutes later and the same thing happened again, ran for 5 minutes then turned off, then cutoff immediately after starting.

there's no petrol on the ground and the gauge says there's 5 miles in the tank,

i'm pretty gutted because it looks all sorted and wanted a wee drive

any input welcome, thanks

It sounds as if it needs more fuel to stay running. What is likely happening is the pump is sucking air after it fills the return lines, filter, etc. Put more fuel in it.

Yeah....put 3 or 4 gallons in it. Does sound like it must have bone dry....did you drain it before you worked on it? The tiny bit of gas in it must be slochibg around....

cheers for the reply guys, em, i've put about 20 litres in it now, started and still getting the same problem,

i'm starting to think it may be like a coolant system safety cut out, the car runs for a while then when it starts to heat, thats when the car cuts out and continues to, then 10 minutes later when its cooled down, runs for a longer time agin. this is my line of thought seeing as i replaced the radiator

can anyone help on this? cheers again

the car will keep runnning....and overheat...the red idiot light will come on, and the head will crack, and the head gasket will blow. No such thing as a safety shutoff in the cooling system.....next guess!!!

hmmm, that makes sense to be honest,

I've been told, by my renault mechanic pal, it could be a simple electrical fault, a diagnostics computer could solve.

i really hoped it was a known error,

please keep the ideas flowin,

If the lights are not lit up on the dash, then there should not be any codes saved.....though you could watch to a minor extent what is happening as the car stalls.....

How much front end dammage was there??

the engine emission light and warning lights are on, but the emission light is on usually anyway due to exhaust and pulley, dont know what the yellow warning light means i've only seen it when i loose grip on the road or turn the traction control off.

the bonet was crumpled and the front engine left engine mount was snapped, thats been replaced,

Sounds like there is some "other" dammage. I would get it into a shop....might be cheaper than throwing parts at it, or breaking it trying to make it run.
Other than checking the electrical connections, like the one next to the air filter, there might not be a lot you can do without some tools that a shop would likely have. Since you did Jack the motor up to replace the mounts, I would check all the connections throughly!!

The pulley when done right will not turn on any lights....if anything it might reduce emissions since it will help to lean out our overly rich running motors....that might increase the NO2 levels a bit, but the 02 sensor is just looking at unburnt fuel.....sorry to go off on a tangent... But it looks like you had some engine troubles before you wrecked your car, thus making it hard to troubleshoot, even for a shop. I would get a pro's help.

Your Renault buddy should have access to a scan tool.If it is OBD2 compliant it will read the trouble codes that will affect the emissions and the codes are universal among manufacturers so if it an O2 sensor, throttle body,Idle control valve, etc the scanner should tell you. Thinking of it, it could be the IAC valve or a throttle body problem if it stalls after it comes off fast idle mode. The MAP sensor could also be damaged and telling the ECU it is running at 20,000 ft. and needs to be leaned out. The scan tool should have a data list and that will give you the sensor values to help you diagnose the problem.

i took the car into the shop today, after hours of diagnosing, they have concluded the pressure sensor is to blame for the idling issues, this is only £50 inc fitting

on an even worse note, however, i have been told the offside driveshaft is nachered, not the happiest person right now :(

fixed, drove the car home today, smiles all the way,

only one wee problem - the bonnet open light is on, obviously the sensor or something was damaged in the crash, anyone know where this is?

thanks,

I'm not positive but the switch is probably part of one of the bonnet latches.
