+1

I just had it happen to my new, 500 mile Cooper. Stopped at a light, on a hill, behind an SUV. The light turns green and the SUV starts to go. So I rev up to 2000 and release the clutch, just as the dingbat in the SUV decides she really doesn't want to go (probably dropped her Venti, decaffinated, Mochachino, soy milk, medium-foam in her lap). I panic stop (no button), and get the strong whiff of clutch. It happened so fast that the clutch probably never fully engaged, and it slipped a good bit. The smell went away and the clutch seems fine, although the twit in the SUV probably cost me 3000 miles of clutch lfe.

Get out and drive the car a significant distance yourself and see if it sounds/feels/smells normal before pushing the panic button after driving the car for a couple miles, part of those when you weren't the driver.

Thanks for the great reply, and I think you are absolutely correct. It seems to have been a WIFE (wife induced failure or error) They should have an icon for that on the warning light panel for that, maybe a handbag with a circle and line through it.

Anyway, it seems to be performing completely normal and no smell at all after my 20 mile ride to work today.

One question though. I think I might have a mini-CEL (very small icon) that I can't figure out and I don't have the manual with me here at work. It is a very small triangle with an asterisk in the the middle between the total mileage and the trip mileage. As Im thinking about it maybe it just means I had the sport button pushed? I did have a tire pressure monitor warning the first night I drove it but I filled the tires (38 psi all the way around btw, does that sound good for the JCW 205/45/17's?) and that light went away. I did a reset on the TPM today on the way to work to see if that would clear the triangle light but it was still there.

Thanks again, any additional infor appreciated!!

Are you referring to the "freeze warning" -- a triangle with a snowflake in the center? Comes on when the temp gets below 37*F.

Nope that's not it, that would be much bigger and fill up most of the Lower Square on the Revolution Counter. I think what he is seeing is a very small Triangle Point-up with an Exclamation Point in it, it means that there is an Error Code stored in your OBC. Cycle through the Service Indicators and see if something doesn't show up that it is due soon, this might be all it is.

I think your seeing the warning indicator. Once the car gets a warning low gas, tire pressure, light bulb etc it will be on. Use the button on turn signal to step thru and see what the warning is.

Thanks for the replies again guys, I'll try that. My car is just over a year old so maybe it is just saying it is due for it's first service?

I must be a little slow but I haven't been able to figure out how to use the turn signal to actually set anything. My clock reads 00:00. I can get to the clock set screen but then what? No matter how I move the stick that doesn't do anything other than turn on the turn signal or brights, the steering wheel buttons dont seem to be it, the joystick doesn't do it. I just had an idea while Im writing this I'll try, but I really need to sit down with the manual and get familiar with it because right now Im pretty lost in my car as far as all the technology, cant even get the clock to work LOL (and why dont they just get the time off of the GPS sat btw?). I've been working LONG hours plus husband/dad duty hasn't given me the chance so far.

Mark,
I let someone else drive my car who said they knew how to drive a manual but when they were driving they were pushing the Rpms high (not red line) before they changed gears. I was horrified and told them they should change gears around 3 Rpm or follow the 10-20, 1st gear
20-30 second gear, 30-40 third gear, 40-50 forth gear, 50-60 5th, and 60+ 6th gear. Well they said "Who taught YOU how to drive a manual?!?" And kept on going. Pretty soon my car began smelling like something was burning. I thought it was brakes. The driver said it was clutch.
When I got home, I turned the car off and the fan kept running (I currently have an error code for the thermostat.) but no light for temp came on.
Its been parked for 15 minutes or so and the fan is off but the smell is still there!!!!!
Many ideas?????
