MINIUSA letter regarding failing O2 sensors in MY 04-06

Just got a letter in the mail from MINIUSA regarding a potential issue with oxygen sensors on 2004-2006 MINIs. Pretty vague, although it's nice to know they're on top of things. So if I replace my header, does this mean the O2 sensor still be covered if I get a CEL...

10/100k extension! Good to know. Thanks for posting! (for some reason I never get these mailed to me. *scratches head*)

I received one today also. Extending the warranty must be cheaper than a recall.

I had an issue with my MINI a month earlier, when it basically died on me, no brakes or power or anything when I was going downhill. Thank goodness that it was early in the morning and there was no traffic. Managed to bring the car to a halt using the hand brake. Guess what was diagnosed as the issue?

Yup, a faulty O2 sensor.

So if any of you encounter any SES lights, and are in the affected years, please take your MINI in ASAP.

The service engine soon light would be the first indication. There are two sensors, one pre-catalytic converter and one post-cat. The pre-cat does most of the work as it monitors the oxygen content of the exhaust gases from the engine to determine if the fuel-air mixture is running lean or rich. If an oxygen sensor were to fail and give false readings, the Electronic Control Module (ECM) would try to compensate for its perceived incorrect fuel/air ratio which could result in varying degrees of poor performance (see previous post from SashaSolitaire). You'd also likely fail your emissions test.

What, the service engine soon light isn't supposed to come on and off at random intervals?

This is good news. I had one of my sensors replaced on warranty (one one month left ) just a couple weeks ago. We have a headers but the dealer didn't seem to mind (maybe because it's Dinan; however the serice writer didn't seen to know much about it ).

If there is a problem with the sensors, there should be a recall not a warranty extension. With the warranty extension, it means that we have to wait until the sensor fails before Mini will do anything. Without a recall, our car can completely die on us while driving, creating a dangerous situation (as it did for Sasha), before Mini has to replace the sensor. That is not the correct way to take care of customers.

Update - my letter came in the mail...and my sister got one for her '06 MCS as well.

Chubbycheddar- I've got an '04 MCS and I've been getting ~28mpg in mixed driving. Mine has gone down as low as 21-22mpg with mostly-spirited driving.

Could the O2 sensor be the cause of low milage? THe best I ever got was a touch over 30 and that was babying it on the highway for the whole trip. I get around 22 in just city driving. I got about 26 when I drive to work about 5 miles surface roads and 15 miles on the freeway each day for 2 years.

The CEL has come on a couple of times but always went off before I could take it to the dealer. It has been a long time since it has happened though, but recently I have had a bad flat spot develop between 2700 and 3700 RPM.

My gas mileage is no better now that I had one of my sensors replaced a few weeks ago.

I also have the flat spot... The dealer recommended a fuel injector cleaning

I have an 03S w/ a P0171 SES code. Spoke to Jan earlier today.
Man...does that guy know Mini's!

The code says that I am "running lean on Bank1". Is Bank1 the front or the rear o2 sensor? Where is a good place to purchase one? I have seen prices vary from $30-ish (no joke really...check out partstrain.com and look for one...
http://www2.partstrain.com/stor/index.php?VN=4294967180+4294964448&Nr=AND%28univer sal:0%29&N=0&Ntt=Oxygen%20Sensor )
to close to $200.

Does anyone know of a reliable brand and a good place to get one? Or should I say a place that does not gouge your pocketbook.
