It seems like I went problem free for the first few months and now all of a sudden I am having all sorts of little things come up. Coincidence that I'm modding? I hope not.

Anyway, the latest...The last couple of days I've noticed a screeching type noise when I am shifting from 1st to 2nd. I've tried to pinpoint it and it seems it is while the clutch pedal is fully depressed, but it will linger a little bit after I let it all the way out. The noise is almost a metal to metal sound. It does not do it on every single shift from 1st to 2nd, but probably 7 out of 10 times. It happens most when I'm "getting on it" (higher revs at shift point), but it will also do it during a calmer shift. Any ideas out there?

I obviously have yet another trip to the dealer but I'd like to know what I'm complaining about when I ask them to fix it.

Thanks,

Ken

It sounds pretty similar to what we had on my 02 MCS. At about 10k miles we noticed from 0-5 mph a rubbing metal sound; somewhat like sticking brake pads. Had it in the shop for diagnosis, they heard the sound, and the dealer said we needed a new transmission; they threw a new clutch in for free (all under warranty). It had something to do with the final drive assembly? We did not get much more info than that.

I must say I am not really happy with the new tranny... It just doesn't shift the same and I think I am noticing a little bit of vibration at highway speed that was not there before.

Get yours checked out... and good luck! (we still love our MINI; but is getting to be like a problem child!)

Are you sure you're using the clutch?

Thanks for the feedback Tonygba. I certainly hope my problem isn't as severe as yours was.

savage65: i know you were only joking, but just so's there's no confusion, this isn't a grinding noise like you would hear if you were to shift incorrectly (grind the gears). This is almost like a glancing blow, a sliding blow, a...I don't know, but it don't sound good. It's almost like if you were to rub two sheets of metal against each other.
