I just had my ECU upgraded by MINI in NJ. It was received back yesterday, and here are my observations: (2002 MCS)

Idle RPM is set at about 950.

Start off in 1st gear is stumble free!!!! Yeah! The car starts smoothly, from the line and with no hesitation.

Today was a pretty hot day here in Los Angeles. With the AC running, it still feels a slight bit boggy getting off the line, but is so so much better. I guess with 1.6L there is bound to be some of it. However, I can say it is totally acceptable.

I drove the car 200 miles today, in all conditions - freeway, hills with and without AC and regular city. It feels like a new car - it is running 100% better. I also found that second gear surging is gone.

Thanks MINI!!

I wish I didn't have to wait until December. My dealer didn't offer, I guess I should have yelled, squeaky wheels, squeaky wheels ...

Does the stumble also affect just Cooper S'? My Dad has an Automatic Cooper and it stumbles and then surges also in second.

many of the issues that the Cooper CVT had were fixed with update 33 (or 34 I can't quite remember) that came out in late spring or early summer. I'd recommend having your dad take it to his dealer and ask for the newest software upgrade. Make sure he references these issues.
