All-

"Hello, may name's Peter, and I have the stumble." I've seen this all over the site, I've read links, I've lived with it for months. While I'm simultaneously fed up with the problem and optimistic about a fix, I've noticed some people selling their cars, and others dissuaded from buying them simply because of stumble. I'm not judging...all of us with the stumble have had our "dark moments" when we've considered our "options." I'm not willing to give up yet' but I am interested in being well-informed, and MCO is the place to do it.

I've noticed that we have new people joining the site daily, and many of them have stumble questions. What is it? Do I have it? Is it contagious?

I thought I would post a few of the recent links here, as a courtesy to those interested in learning more about the issue. I DO NOT want to replace the good threads out there…I just want to collect their information in one place. I HIGHLY recommend the first thread listed here "Stumble" as a first stop for those interested, and a place to post new information.

This list is not exhaustive, nor is it in any way scientific. This was an "I'm bored at work on Friday" project to give me something useful to do. Please post other links here, if you so desire.

And above all, let's home MINI USA sees the light, and gives us some information we can use. We know they're trying, we just want a fix. Soon. Please.

Stumble

EDIT: Could it be the fix?
STUMBLE IS GONE!!! v.36 software actually works! GET IT!

OK, is the 'stumble' that's been talked about on accel or decel?
Stumble/yo-yo...the real story
Another stumble forum:

New MCS Owners (past two months), do they stumble?

And, mods to address stumble:

Again, this list certainly doesn't cover it all. I don't claim to endorse any particuar mod to address stumble, since I haven't personally made any.

Wow. Very comprehensive! Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to put this together. If any Mods are watching, I highly recommend that this be stickied to the top of the BtB forum!

My pleasure! In lieu of any real original/helpful information, I thought I'd just help spread the word of folks more in tune than me.

I've noticed the stumble, dangerously pulling out of a one way onto a major street... not fun. Clutch up, Gas Down... Slooooooooowly made my way to safety.

Mini reccomends that you warm up your car by driving at a slower rate. I say phooey! Anytime that i start up my car and just drive off, i get the stumble.

I found that If i warm up my car first for about a minute or so, i get no stumble. Anyone else?

I'm not yet an official Mini owner. However, a MCS is on its way! After reading all the threads in MCO and MINI2, I'm very concern about all the quality issues. As my MCS begins its production in Nov. 14th, I really like to learn more about the Mini, especially regarding the widely discussed issue of stumble, hiccup, yo-yo, stutter, hesitation, etc. What do all those terms mean???

Years ago, I used to be a hardcore European Car admirer. After meeting my wife, she introduced me to Japanese autos, mainly Toyota and Lexus, which we now own 3 (Lexus SUV, Toyota truck, and a Scion). I've not considered any European brand since; or should I say, not until now. Because I really love the Mini, which is why I've placed an order for a pure silver/black top MCS w/ possibly JCW. Now, all the discussions concerning the quality issues have almost dissuaded from taking the delivery of the car in Dec. On the other hand, I really love the MCS. Confusion! Confusion! Confusion! What should I do????????????????????????????

Hi everyone, I am new to this site but have had my S for over a year now. My car never had the stumble until I thought I was doing a good thing and had the "Cold Start" problem fixed. Now I have it, and two software updates later it's a little better but not much. My useless dealer told me that it was normal and only happened when the car was cold. I take great offence to someone who drove my car 2 miles telling me how a car that I have put 22,000 miles on runs.

Anyway, My mini is still the best "impulse buy" I have ever made but the stumble Really ****** me off.

Perhaps we could somehow call this collection of stumble threads to the attention of Mini and make it clear to them that this IS a problem and it WILL effect the number of cars they sell as word leaks out to our friends and family.

By the way, talking nice to the car seems to have a better effect than the previous software "upgrades"

Cheers
Gary

Gary--

Good news (hopefully) on the Stumble... Take your car in, and see if the latest software (v.36...just released) is on there. If not, get it soon. You'll be happy you did.

Til then, know you've got friends who "feel your pain". Still a fun toy, stumble and all!

I tried the Works software. The stumble is still there. If you can vary the throttle input at the onset of the stumble (either more or less) the stumble can be avoided. It's not the answer since the stumble occurs at different rpm depending on load and speed, but it can become a game of "beat the computer" until the fix comes along. I love the driving experience of the MINI so much that I'm willing to overlook the stumble for a while. I'm sure that it will get annoying after a while, but for right now it's a challenge of "avoiding the stumble".

My question is: Is it (the stumble) an issue of English idiosyncrasy (Sure it leaks oil, it has oil in the bloody crankcase! or Germany denial (Ve design the best brake pads in ze vorld, zey are zuppoze to turn ze veels black after 50 milez!!!). Zum how, er, I mean some how I think the German Denial ethic won out. I also own a Miata and the "official joke" within Mazda is that no German was allowed within a hundrend miles of the soft top development of the Miata. Think of every German car before 1980 and how far the top sticks up above the body (and rear view mirrow line) to understand the German denial on this topic.

Don't get me wrong, I love my MINI. I'm just trying to de-Germanize it.

German brake pads replaced with British Mintex, German wheels and run-flats replaced with Japanese Volk LE37 and Toyo T1S.

We own a 2003 Mini Base with the CVT. We picked it up in March of 2003.
We also noticed was is being called "Stumble". It was not to bad but it
was there. I replaced the Air Filter with a K&N Air Filter and also installed
A Tornado Air Management System. The Cost for these two items was
appx. $140.00. This did not void the Warranty on the Vehicle. The
difference in performance was Great. The " Stumble" was gone.
we love our Mini. It is a terrific Vehicle.
