tachometer display

Anybody know what it means (if anything) if just left of the trip odometer mileage readout is an orange triangle with an exclamation point sort of like
" / ! \ 227.7" ???

It reads out in normal orange color (not yellow) and nothing is binging or bonging, but I'm wondering if it's normal; it's the first time I've noticed the exclamation point there and couldn't find anything in the manual that explains it.

Thanks! Greg

Could it be a service notice?

That's an alert that says something isn't right, but it's not serious enough to cause problems. Off the top of my head, I think the process to see a pictogram that tells you what the issue is to put the fob into the port and press the start key with your foot off the brake/clutch, so the car fully turns on without starting the engine. Push the turn indicator stalk button until you get to the Set-up option, then press and hold the button. Once the display changes, one of the options will be to see the problem. At that point, you'll probably need the manual to decode the pictogram.

The whole process is detailed in the owner's manual; look carefully at the page that details the tach display for the exact name that Mini uses for it, then go to the section that talks about it. It's there, but I found it tricky to find.

When I first picked up my MCS, I had that symbol because the tire pressure sensor system hadn't been initialized. I've also seen this when my seatbelt isn't fastened.

Thanks Ken. I'll give that a try.

It was indeed the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that needed to be reset, which was easy. Just press and hold the RESET button and then drive off while the tire icon illuminates and it resets.
Thanks again.

Might be worthwhile to actually check the tire pressures after seeing that warning.

With the coming of cooler weather, it would be common to need to add a few lbs. of air to each tire.

Yeah, definitely. I do check them periodically, but not as often as I should - usually, I rely on gas mileage as an indicator as to whether or not tire pressure is ok - I've historically seen mileage decrease significantly with underinflated tires and of course handling gets squirrely then too. Although, I remember reading some study where tire pressure was not related to cause significant mileage reduction, somewhat debunking that "myth".

With the cold weather, if the temperature drops close to 32 F a warning light and chime and let you know, for safety. Dont slip on the ice.

On mine (Australian spec, if it makes a difference), any alert comes up in the display and chimes. When I acknowledge the alert by pressing the tip of the blinker stalk, the little triangle thing comes on - I guess to keep reminding me there was an alert. There's all sorts of alerts - the one I get most often is that the windscreen washer bottle is almost empty - which is useful to know, but not really something I need to be reminded about continually as I drive along!). I have a vague recollection you can make some adjustments to the program of how the whole thing works. A mixture of RTM and experimentation...

The TPM should be re-set following a tire pressure check, even if they were fine. Dealer had mine inflated to 38psi (good for over 100mph!).

FWIW mine has (since day of delivery) had a daily, momentary "Boo-Bee-Bop" and a brief Tach ICON that is gone before you can press the TS button.

Always wondered if it was getting a signal from another auto, but is usually at a corner with no other traffic around.

There had been one instance of the TPM warning remaining and a Speedometer ICON the next morning, a check found pressure down to 31psi on all four (after five months).

I had the TPS warn me when one tire was 7 psi down and the rest 4 psi low from normal leak-down. It happened when I was way out at the Point Reyes lighthouse, 25+ miles from a service station. I re-set the system after inspecting the tires and seeing nothing; I figured if I missed seeing a nail the system would reactivate. It didn't and I re-set it again after re-filling the tires.

In general, the TPS works nice; it's better than the mileage system and I've heard that run-flats don't bulge out like regular tires when they're low. All you have to remember is how to re-set the system.
