Exhaust smoke, burning smell
Exhaust smoke, burning smell
I picked up my new MCS at the port in Charleston and was driving down to Savannah. Not much highway driving, only a short section. I did not exceed the break-in RPM or use excessive speed. When I exited the ramp to fuel up, I looked in the rear view mirror and saw exhaust smoke coming from the tail pipe. I did not notice a hot engine gauge or anything else abnormal. I immediately checked the oil and it was not low or did it have a burnt oil smell.
After fueling up, I proceeded to Savannah, and took it easy around town. I have since smelled the same exhaust smell 2 other times. The MCS now has 675 miles on it, and wanted to know if anyone else has this happen. It is an 08 MCS.

The smoke appears to be gone. I still get a tiny bit of smell when I turn it off.
The smoke was coming from the exhaust, and there was reside on the inside bottom of the pipe. I'm glad it was not an engine or turbo issue. And sk8erguyzach, the check engine light was what l really wanted to say. I was looking for an indication of either burning oil or something like engine blow-by.
Thanks

Hey man,
Same thing happened to me on the way home for the dealer (about an 80 mile driive)...I did not notice it until I stopped in some traffic. Smoke was billowing out the back!
It was alarming but it turned out to be just cosmoline burning off the exhaust area. I hope it was the same deal for you.

^^^ something i was gonna mention.....could of also been undercoating on the exhaust....we had a m3 huffin smoke almost like spyhunter....we lifted the car and found 4ft of the exhaust at the manifold covered in cosmoline
Sounds like you just had some burnable stuff on your pipe from the factory. Probably should have been cleaned a bit better. I've read that the tail pipes get kinda hot on the MCS's.

I had something similar with my 2007 R56. I brought it to the dealership and said that I gassed it up with bad particles in the gas. Though I used premium gas, there were some things in it that the car didn't like. They highly recommended I use Chevron Premium. The burning smell soon disappeared.
You can get an oily, burning smell from the exhaust system as it burns off the oil on the pipe and in the muffler. This is just oil from the manufacturing process and will produce some smoke for a while until it burns it all off. I had it with mine when new and then had it again after I changed to the Invidia cat back exhaust.
