Exhaust smoke, burning smell
Exhaust smoke, burning smell
I picked up my new MCS at the port in Charleston and was driving down to Savannah. Not much highway driving, only a short section. I did not exceed the break-in RPM or use excessive speed. When I exited the ramp to fuel up, I looked in the rear view mirror and saw exhaust smoke coming from the tail pipe. I did not notice a hot engine gauge or anything else abnormal. I immediately checked the oil and it was not low or did it have a burnt oil smell.
After fueling up, I proceeded to Savannah, and took it easy around town. I have since smelled the same exhaust smell 2 other times. The MCS now has 675 miles on it, and wanted to know if anyone else has this happen. It is an 08 MCS.

The first time I drove mine into my garage I could've sworn I smelled bread baking. My car stills gives off that smell at times. I just assume plastic things, spilled stuff and metal pieces are burning off my still new car. I wouldn't worry unless you see smoke or flames.
Did you see it coming from inside the tail pipe or just around the exhaust area? It could be cosmoline dripping on the exhaust and smoking. You'll notice this stuff under the bonnet, the boot and under doors. It'll seep out with the engine heat and hot sun. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ght=rwwilsonjr
Thanks for the reassurance. While I only saw smoke once, and the inside of tail pipes looked like burnt residue, I have only smelt the the burning smell without actually seeing any exhaust blowby the other times. My 76 BMW 2002 smokes like a chimney.

Mine just had a little smoke from the stuff burning off the inside of the exhaust, even though it's stainless there is a coating on the exhaust tubing from the factory for when it's store before being made into exhaust pieces if that makes sense. Doesn't really burn off until things get really warm...so it takes a bit.
My 2008 MCS have "burnt" marks around the edges of the exhaust pipe also, although i have never smelled anything or seen smoke (that i have noticed). My husband looked at the pipes this weekend and said he didn't like the looks of the pipes... Should I be concerned? Should I call the dealer?

I test drove MCS a couple of weeks ago. It had about 27 miles at the odometer. When I stopped at the red light I did see in the rear view mirror a lot of smoke going up. Not sure what was that - rather not the exhaust smoke but something was burning around exhaust system. It smelled like some rubber was burning. I was really scared and drove back to the dealership trying not to stop anymore.
So is it common? Cause I thought there was something really bad with that car. Like some assembly issue - sort of plastic or rubber stuff touching the exhaust system and burning when there was not enough air flow to cool the whole thing down.

I never saw smoke on my MCS but definitely smelled the new exhaust cook-off smell. Same as when I put a headers-back exhaust kit on my Mustang. I assume there are coatings on the metals that cook off or bake on.
