Update on sunroof not opening when hot...

I stopped at a dealer yesterday and had their "sunroof" bulletin done. It consisted on nothing more than adjusting the sunroof to make sure the rails are parallel and lubing the track.

As I had mentioned on another thread, my experience in the bodyshop business tells me that it is unlikely that an adjustment will fix a problem that occurs only when it's hot.

It's possible but unlikely.

Anyway, long story short, I had it done and today I'm in Tampa where it's in the low 90's and my sunroof doesn't work.

I had to try it at least 10 times before it finally opened.

Hmmmmm, I wonder if I take it back 2 more times, I can return the car under the lemon law....

(BTW, hell no, I'd rather weld my sunroof closed than lose my mini)

I would think not since it's only happens in the extreme heat. Seems that a travel limit switch could care less if it's hot outside.

Heat could be distorting the switch housing causing the switch contacts not to make a connection. Next time sun roof is stuck try tapping around the roof opening while you hold the switch to the open position. Also moisture could have got in the switch and its slightly corroded. Or mabey the motor has a problem. But Im still leaning towards a switch....

The sunroof issue isn't limited to just "extreme" heat. I live in San Francisco, and on an 80-degree day (car parked outside all day), I have had to tap the back edge of the sunroof to get it to open. After that, it's just fine. But I'd hardly call 80 degrees "extreme heat."

I've tried tapping, pushing and everything in between. I doubt moisture is an issue because my car had less than 2500 miles on it and at that time, had never seen rain and only washed a few times.

I could understand if it was older but....

Wow, that's the first I've heard of anyone having a problem with that kind of heat. All the ones I've heard of including mine has to be usually mid 90's.

Also, as I stated earlier, pushing or tapping doesn't help mine at all. I'm wondering if since your sunroof a) can be opened by tapping/pushing and b) does it at only 80 degrees, I'm wondering if your sunroof is just an adjustment problem.

ive had problem since day 1 when i left dealership. Its direct sunlight that causes problems. If i park in shade in 100 degrees it more likely to open than in 80 degrees in direct sunlight. They replaced entire sunroof then realighned track then replaced motor and switches. guess what still a problem must be a engineering defect. Overall not a big deal works fine after a few minutes but is annoying and not what i expect from mini!!!!!!!!

You mean you've only had your MINI two weeks and you're having repeated sunroof problems? That's a bummer (an expression from the Dark Ages).

The sunroof issue was there when I took delivery. Happened when my MA was showing me the car and how everything worked.

But, since I've been following the sunroof thread, I know it's an issue that MINI knows about, so I figure that it will get taken care of. We don't have a lot of warm enough days to trigger it, and just a simple tap at the back edge of the sunroof will release it or whatever so that I can open the sunroof. So it doesn't really bother me. Now if it didn't open AT ALL, I'd consider that a problem.

+1. The switch was my problem, but the problem occurred when it got real cold. Could be the same issue.

Mine's going back in for the 3rd time on the 7th to have the sunroof TSB applied. I'll let everybody know how it goes.

I'd love to lemon-law mine (and get a MCS), but I'm at 28k miles/6 months. Too far out?

I hope that the sunroof TSB finally cures your sunroof situation.

Also here is the California Lemon Law Statues:

Link:http://www.carlemon.com/lemon/CA_law.html

Look it over and see if that might help some.
Plus check your Service & Warranty Information booklet which also list the Customer Assistance Information and what to do.

Good luck and keep us posted when you can.

MY PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED WHEN DEALER CHANGED THE ENTIRE SUNROOF'S MECHANISM. A NEW ONE IS COMING FROM GERMANY (SECOND GENERATION) TO FINISHED THE ISSUES. YOU MUST GO TO THE DEALER AND DEMAND FOR A CHANGE. MINE WAS CHANGED UNDER WARRANTY. I LIVE IN MEXICO AND THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS, THAT IS THE REASON WHY THEY ARE CHANGING THE SUNROOF FOR AN IMPROVED ONE!!!

Come see us next summer and tell me it fixes the problem. You are not the first person to have the entire mechanism changed and it still didn't work.

The problem is wrong materials. Changing the cassette over with the exact same thing changes nothing.

Hope yours works.... I just wouldn't hold my breath. We'll see when it's 95 outside.

Mark
