Another melting hoodscoop thread...*sigh*

Well the other day I come out to my car after work and sure enough the sun hits things just right and my hood scoop has that tell tale dimple in it. So I go to the dealer and they take a look, mention something about it looking like someone leaned on it and questioned the hood being repainted...and so on, but after talking about it for a bit they agreed the hood scoop would be replaced for free. So I brought up the idea of replacing it with the carbon fiber one to save them money, and me the aggravation of it ever happening again...they weren't going for that at all lol. They mentioned something about it being through two different departments and how it has to be replaced with the same exact part blah blah. Which made no sense to me since they are ordering the new scoop through parts THEN having it painted at the body shop...so that goes through one EXTRA department than just odering the JCW one lol... So I gave it a shot...but we'll see how long the next hood scoop lasts lol. Sorry not really a rant...more curious to hear from those that did bargain into getting a JCW scoop instead so I can be jealous and/or find out how you did it

How many miles do you have on it?
when i come home,I just pop the hood and leave it up overnight. Then when i go places,I just pop the hood and hope it releases enough air to prevent warping it.

What else can we do to help prevent this issue?

I would try to keep the leaving of the hood open over night to a minimum as it will accelerate the wearing out of the hood struts. Those aren't meant to last forever and they do give out eventually. I made the mistake of leaving mine open one time for a few days and came back with the hood slammed shut and the struts blown out.

I am concerned about this issue too, since I have an S, but why start another new thread about it? Why not put your experience together with the others? Anyone new having a similar problem will have to read multiple threads, right?

Just a suggestion.

Well that's the problem, there are a bunch of melting hoodscoop threads...that have gone off on various tangents. So I didn't even know where to begin lol.

With all the threads I have seen about the bonnet issue I have what I think is a decent solution.
What I have seen of the "Turbo" and a glowing red video on "You Tube" I purchased a heat shield from DDM Works.
I get my new Mini tomorrow and I don't want any hint of heat issues from there.
I am also making my scoop a working CAI with their "RAM Air Scoop" RAS for the R56. Bring in cooler air can only help and since I went for the CAI (Street) a little boost in power never hurts.

Don't open the hood too often, seems you can only open it a certain number of times before the hood release cable malfunctions...

Wonder if there is a way to funnel more outside air to flow over the turbo to help cool it off? Or a way to get the hot air out of the engine bay faster

From other posts by users that know about these things say the turbo needs to retain it heat and cool down naturally.
Read other posts for the "Turbo or heat issues" to get a better understanding of the dynamics for heat exchange and what is needed to keep your Mini Turbo healthy.
Good Luck.

I thought that they resolved this problem in 2008 by opening up the scoop that was otherwise closed off and non-functional on the '07s.

Only the first 2 months of 07's had a closed scoop. I have an April 07 build with every other opening in the honey comb and do have a small dip in the middle of my scoop.

Thanks for the education. Would a painted CF scoop resolve the problem?

I went to the DDM Works site, but couldn't find any info on a heat shield for the turbo. Can you post a link?

Thanks

I wonder if people with melting scoops spend more time doing stop and go city driving than those that don't. My commute normally consists of about 5 miles stop and go and then 15 miles of highway miles so I get lots of airflow while driving. No melting yet...

I'm thinking of adding this product to the underside of the hood
http://http://www.heatshieldproducts.com/heat_shield_cloth.php

This site also has stuff to wrap your CIA tube and a turbo wrap.

Try Way Motor Works 317-201-8670. He produces the turbo heat shield which is fitted. His website is in the vendor list.

Do owners with the JCW carbon fiber scoop report this problem?
