Okay..I know this is a major thing that plagues many 02 MC..today while leaving work my power steering went kaput..i pulled into a parking spot..checked all fluid levels..looked under the car..nothing low..nothing broken..started it back up to drive home...and it was working again..for about a month there has been a squeaking noise (belt sounding) coming from 2 out of the 3 pulleys on my engine/ serpentine belt...i know its 2 because i put some wd-40 on the pulleys and it stopped the squeaking for a bit...so either way i need to replace the power stealing pump/belt etc...i was wondering really if this is something that i can do at my house with my father or is this replacement something that an actual mechanic needs to work on..also is the pump something i need to purchase new or can it be rebuilt? if new where could i find a reasonably priced one..any ideas on anything? any help would be sooo greatly appreciated..

 

The belt shouldn't be too much trouble. I have an S so I'm not sure if you need a special belt tensioner tool on the Cooper. As for the PS pump, it's expen$ive. Almost $600 with a $60 core charge. Do the belt first and see if that fixes things. If the belt is original, maybe it's simply slipping.

 

are there any warranties or recalls on ps pumps since so many people have issues with them?
